Those "peace-loving" San Fran-istan liberals
Where else but San Franistan?
It was supposed to be a birthday night out for the kids in San Francisco, but instead turned into a Critical Mass horror show — complete with a pummeled car, a smashed rear window and little children screaming in terror. The spontaneous Critical Mass bike rides, in which thousands of free-spirited cyclists roam the city, have been a fixture on the last Friday night of the month since the early 1990s. But even bike-weary cops, who have seen their share of traffic disturbances and minor skirmishes, weren’t prepared for what happened during the latest exercise of pedal power.
Here’s the story:
Susan Ferrando, her husband, their two children and three preteens had come to San Francisco from Redwood City to celebrate the birthday of Ferrando’s 11-year-old daughter. They went to Japantown, where they enjoyed shopping and taking in the blooming cherry blossoms.
Things took a turn for the worse at about 9 p.m., when the family was leaving Japantown — just as the party of about 3,000 bikers was winding down its monthly red-lights-be-damned ride through the city.
Suddenly, Ferrando said, her car was surrounded by hundreds of cyclists.
…
Confusion, however, quickly turned to terror, she said, when the swarming cyclists began wildly circling around and then running into the sides of her Toyota van.Filled with panic, Ferrando said, she started inching forward until coming to a stop at Post and Gough streets, where she was surrounded by bikers on all sides.
A biker in front blocked her as another biker began pounding on the windshield. Another was pounding on her window. Another pounded the other side.
“It seemed like they were using their bikes as weapons,” Ferrando said. One of the bikers then threw his bike — shattering the rear window and terrifying the young girls inside.
All the while, Ferrando was screaming, “There are children in this car! There are children in this car!”
She had the presence of mind to dial 911 on her cell phone — and within minutes, the squad of motorcycle cops who were assigned to keep an eye on the ride descended on the scene.
The cyclists were loudly demanding that Ferrando be arrested for hit and run.
According to police, Ferrando had allegedly tapped one of the cyclists’ tires.
When the alleged bicycle victim was approached, however, he said he wasn’t hurt. He also refused to give his name or any other information.
Then, after a few swear words, the alleged victim took off on his bike while the rest of the crowd continued to yell at both the cops and the van.
Sgt. Ed Callejas — the lead cop on the scene and a veteran of Critical Mass rides since their inception — said he’d never seen anything like it before.
…
Estimated damage to the car: $5,300.
Families. Minivans. The military. The American flag. Is there any part of normal America that San Franistan doesn’t revile?
Schools’ anti-terrorism drills "realistic"?
Yet another sad story in the War and Peace-sized novel being written on the sad state of affairs in the public education system in this country. From New Joisey:
The scenario has played out in real life across America: Gunfire echoes through a school and students are held hostage. But police, faculty and staff lived out their own make-believe version yesterday of just such a tragedy at Burlington Township High School, complete with Kevlar-clad officers, armed suspects and students portraying the wounded and dead.
The purpose of the drill was to test the reactions of police, faculty and administration.
“You perform as you practice,” Superintendent Chris Manno said prior to the exercise. “We need to practice under conditions as real as possible in order to evaluate our procedures and plans so that they’re as effective as possible.”
“Practice under conditions as real as possible”? Makes sense. But if that’s the intent, then why this?
Two Burlington Township police detectives portrayed the gunmen. Investigators described them as members of a right-wing fundamentalist group called the “New Crusaders” who don’t believe in separation of church and state. The mock gunmen went to the school seeking justice because the daughter of one had been expelled for praying before class.
Wacked-out “Christian” nutbars fomenting terrorism, huh? I thought the aim was to “practice under conditions as real as possible”? We didn’t see any self-detonating bandana-wearing camelhumping jihadists shrieking “Allahu Akbar.” No, instead we saw the ever-present, always-dangerous, perennially violent…Christians. What a whitewash!
We’ve seen the same thing before in this country’s schools:
“The exercise will simulate an attack by a fictitious radical group called Wackos Against Schools and Education who believe everyone should be homeschooled. Under the scenario, a bomb is placed on the bus and is detonated while the bus is traveling on Durham, causing the bus to land on its side and fill with smoke.”This is not a joke. A taxpayer-funded drill is using public school students to enforce anti-homeschooling bigotry under the guise of preparing for terrorism. Terrorism by whom? By Islamic jihadists who hijack planes and incinerate kids headed to Disneyworld. Islamic terrorists who take hundreds of children hostage in Beslan, force them to drink their own urine and shoot babies in the back. Islamic terrorists who groom toddlers as suicide bombers.
Our enemies are Islamic extremist murderers. Except if you happen to attend the Muskegon County, Mich., schools, where the menacing faces of terrorism belong to parents who make untold sacrifices to give their children the best education they know how by schooling them in the loving environment of their own homes….
I seem to recall the national teacher’s unions telling us after 9/11 that we should go to great lengths to let our kids know that no group was responsible for the attacks. You know, so as to avoid any sweeping generalizations that could marginalize Muslims? However, when it comes to ticking off and marginalizing Christians and homeschoolers, knock yourselves out. After all, these linguine-spined educrats are certain that Christians aren’t going to violently retaliate. The same cannot be said of the chronically-aggrieved Muslims.
Bush vs. Congress on pork-laden Iraq spending bill
From Dick Morris:
Democrats in Congress are heading into a game of chicken with the Bush White House akin to the Gingrich-Clinton government shutdown battle of 1995-96. The roles are reversed this time – so the Republicans are likely to prevail. The consequences will be lasting. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will find their party shattered. Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will be forced to choose sides in their party’s schism.
The game will unfold predictably. The House and the Senate will compromise on the differences in their legislation funding the Iraq War; the end product, carrying poison-pill language that sets a deadline for troop withdrawal, will go to the White House to face an inevitable presidential veto. The Democrats’ override attempt will fail – and a deadlock will ensue.
Then the Democrats will threaten to withhold funding for the war in Iraq unless the White House agrees to some form of deadline. The Bush administration will reply that it will never agree to a schedule for troop withdrawal – and both sides will glare at the other across an abyss.
But Bush will, inevitably, win the game of chicken. Pelosi and Reid have too much sense to be caught denying funding to troops in combat. Bush will make the price of obstinacy too great for the Democrats to bear.
Nobody will want to be in the position of cutting off funding and appearing to undermine the troops during a war.
But the consequences for Pelosi of a retreat will be serious: She’ll leave behind her the party’s left – who will never vote for funding without also mandating withdrawal. Pelosi will have to scramble and craft a majority with a combination of Republican votes and support from the center of her own party.
The speaker will probably wind up having to vote against the majority of her Democratic members. That spectacle won’t be healthy for her future authority or control.
If the Republicans are smart, they will let Pelosi hang by her own rope and will force her to break her party apart by twisting arms for every last vote to pass a funding bill.
…
The left will not forgive a vote to fund the war without requiring a withdrawal date – but the general electorate will not look kindly on pulling back funds during a war.For his part, President Bush needs to stand firm as this process unfolds. The split the funding resolution will catalyze in the Democratic Party may be his party’s only hope of hanging onto the White House in 2008. He should resist calls for compromise, since any halfway solution or diplomatic wording that could appeal to both sides will rescue the Democrats from the horns of their dilemma – and run most or all of the risks for the troops and the mission in Iraq as the current bills present.
Bush should demand a clean appropriations bill or guarantee a veto. If he doesn’t flinch and congressional Republicans don’t defect, it will be bad news for the Democrats.
This is a rather rosy assessment by Morris that makes what I believe to be a very faulty assumption. The assumption is that if the Dem Congress sends Bush a pork-laden Iraq appropriations bill and Bush vetoes it, the Dems in Congress would look bad. With the MSM on the Dems’ side? Pfffft! Puh-leeeeze!
I recall the government shutdown of 1995-96 quite well. Bubba’s approval ratings were quite low before the shutdown, as evidenced by his party’s monumental and wholesale electoral #sskicking in November ’94. The new GOP Congress sent Bubba a budget that slashed federal spending on a plethora of wasteful (and unconstitutional) programs. The GOP banked on Bubba signing the bill to avoid risking the government shutdown, and since his approval ratings were already low, surely he’d sign it. They bet on the wrong horse.
Bubba got in front of his sycophants in the media and blamed the mean ol’ GOP for wanting to shut down the government because he wouldn’t let them starve kids and kick old people in the streets. Only a boob would believe that was the GOP’s desires, but fortunately for Bubba, many a leftist boob work in the MSM. Bubba and the MSM successfully demonized the GOP Congress for shutting down the government, Bubba’s approval ratings rebounded, and he went on to win a decisive re-election effort.
Shoe’s on the other foot now. We have a Republican president and a Democrat Congress threatening a train wreck. Who would the MSM demonize? Morris seems to think it will be the Dems who get demonized. I’d like to think he’s right on this, but I don’t. The MSM is just too freakin’ slanted to allow Mistress Nancy and Harry “Land Shark” Reid, not to mention Shrillary and Osamabama, to take a big hit on this. The headlines would read “Bush denies Iraq soldiers funds, food, weapons”.
Miss dhimmi in Syria, but Mistress Chicken in D.C.!
"Conscientous objector"
As Hot Air puts it in their headline: “Man who objects to killing people joins the, um, Marines”.
Even stupider than the Ehren Watada case, where the objection at least wasn’t to war per se but to the Iraq war specifically. The next thing will be volunteers who conscientiously object to having to carry a gun because they want to fight the jihadis “MacGyver style.”
Another boot camp instructor showed recruits a “motivational clip” showing Iraqi corpses, explosions, gun fights and rockets set to a heavy metal song that included the lyrics, “Let the bodies hit the floor,” the petition said. Zabala said he cried, while other recruits nodded their heads in time with the beat.
Unreal.
The "peace-loving" left
I’ve demonstrated on numerous occasions how the “peace-loving” left is actually quite violent themselves. Case in point:
White House Advisor Karl Rove was the target of a protest on the American University campus Tuesday night, NBC 4 reported.
Rove was on the campus to talk to the College Republicans, but when he got outside more than a dozen students began throwing things at him and at his car, an American University spokesperson said.
Rove should be thankful he didn’t have police protection. Otherwise, he’d be getting an invoice right about now.
Profiles in moonbattery: Tacoma
Not to be outdone by its sister city Seattlestan in the anti-military moonbattery department, Tacoma is getting in on the act. From the Seattlestan fishwrap:
Tacoma police say last month’s 12-day anti-war protests cost the city an unbudgeted $500,000 to provide a large-scale law enforcement presence. The rough estimate covers overtime, regular compensation, equipment and food for hundreds of workers from Tacoma police and other agencies, Assistant Chief Bob Sheehan said.
The city plans to ask the Port of Tacoma and the military to cover some of the costs.
“That’s a tremendous hit on our budget — a half-million dollars of unexpected expense,” said Tacoma Mayor Bill Baarsma, adding that the military would get the first invoice.
“I think our request is justifiable,” Baarsma said. “I would expect that we would be reimbursed. I would be surprised if we weren’t.”
Police increased law enforcement at the Port of Tacoma during the convoying and storage of Army Stryker vehicles from March 3 until a ship carrying the military equipment left for Iraq on March 14.
Protesters were there each night.
Just to make sure I’m understanding this correctly:
A legion of unemployable non-bathing dope-smoking anti-troop hippie retread miscreants decided to show up and taunt America’s Finest as they were preparing to deploy to war. Tacoma dispatched a fleet of law enforcement officers to make sure said miscreants didn’t get out of hand (as they are known to do). Now, the city of Tacoma wants the military to pay for trying to keep the miscreants at bay?
What a precedent: billing others to keep thugs off their backs! Good God (insert politically correct deity/entity of choice here), why don’t we also bill rape victims for the costs incurred to prosecute their attackers? Memo to Tacoma: our soldiers were the victims here, NOT your city! If I were the military, I’d tell Tacoma to go driving with Ted Kennedy.
Un-freakin’-believable. As always, if you haven’t questioned their patriotism yet, go ahead and feel free to do so at this time.
Euro governments: You can’t name your child that!
The Euros sure have been giving me a lot of material lately. Hat tip to Michelle Malkin:
Item number one: Couple fights to name baby ‘Metallica’
Michael and Karolina Tomaro are locked in a court battle with Swedish authorities, which rejected their application to name their six-month-old child after the legendary rock band.
“It suits her,” Karolina Tomaro, 27, said Tuesday of the name. “She’s decisive and she knows what she wants.”Although little Metallica has already been baptized, the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word “metal.”
Tomaro said the official handling the case also called the name “ugly.”
Item number two: Appeal over baby named Jihad
The German interior ministry is appealing against a decision by the Berlin authorities to allow an Islamist to name his son Jihad, the Arabic word used for holy war. Reda Seyam fought for 18 months for permission to give his sixth child the name after the registry in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg initially rejected his application, saying the name was inappropriate because of its association with terrorism, and “may endanger the child”.Ok, while I’m not a fan of either of those names, I am even more creeped out by these European laws regulating what parents name their babies.
She’s right. Let the parents name the kids whatever the hell they want. Their kids would be guaranteed frequent @sskickings, wedgies, and stolen lunch money with names like “Metallica” and “Jihad”. Then again, with names like that, they could always come to the US and get elected to public office in San Fran-istan when they grow up.
Nanny state government at its finest, huh?
