"Los Angeles sued over sanctuary policy"
No doubt this will piss of my resident open borders apologists. From LA-LA-Land:
Illegal immigration opponents have sued the Los Angeles Police Department, taking aim at its long-standing policy of ignoring most suspects’ immigration status.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Superior Court seeks to force officers to inform federal immigration officials when illegal immigrants are arrested on drug charges. The department prohibits officers from inquiring about the immigration status of suspects, a policy strongly supported by Police Chief William Bratton and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
The lawsuit was brought on behalf of unidentified police officers who are afraid to speak out but argue the policy creates a situation where the same illegal immigrants are repeatedly arrested when they could have been deported, lawyer David Klehm said.
“Everyone I spoke to told me their hands were tied with this policy,” Klehm said.
The lawsuit relies on a section of the state’s Health and Safety Code that states that in drug cases involving a non-citizen, “the arresting agency shall notify the appropriate agency of the United States having charge of deportation.”
Los Angeles police officers do not ask about immigration status while interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects, and do not arrest people based on immigration status.
Fly the friendly skies…just don’t go in the bathrooms!
The headline reads as follows: . That certainly got my attention. From Breitbart/AP:
At the world’s busiest airport, plainclothes officers patrolling public restrooms in search of luggage thieves have instead uncovered a rash of other, more sordid crimes.
The new restroom dragnet has led to the arrests of more than 30 people in three months for indecent exposure and public sex acts at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.Airport restrooms apparently have become such popular meeting places for men looking for sexual trysts with other men that they have been suggested several times as meeting places in personal ads on the Web site Craigslist.
“Hey … I’m stuck at the airport from 5 p.m. and I’m looking for a good time …,” one ad reads. In another, the person posting says he is stuck at the airport for three hours in the evening and is looking for “discreet, quick action.”
The new patrols were started to stop theft, not catch people in sex acts, police officials say.
Officers started monitoring the restrooms after figuring out that thieves were pulling bags off baggage-claim carousels and taking them into toilet stalls to comb through them.
“We’re trying to provide a safe environment for everyone at the airport,” said Officer Joseph Villafane, a police spokesman. “We’re not out to get all that—it’s just we encounter it.”
Among those arrested is Ed Wall, the board chairman of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority. An officer said he saw Wall having oral sex with another man. Wall, who has temporarily stepped down from his post, has maintained his innocence. A court date has not been set.
Of course he’s innocent! The officer didn’t understand that Wall was simply having skin flute…I mean, flute…lessons in the bathroom! I mean, just where is a man supposed to go for flute lessons, huh? Continuing:
Still, some say the airport police should have better things to do than stake out restrooms.“Police have far better things to do with their time than to arrest people for this,” said Kenneth Sherrill, professor at Hunter College of The City University of New York. “Being ‘sex police’ in bathrooms strikes me as a perversion of rational law enforcement activities.”
Leave it to a pointy-headed pseudo-intellectual to try and rationalize the crime and portray the police as “perverted.” Sex in a bathroom stall at an airport? Not perverted. Police enforcing the law? Perverted. Got it, Professor. Thanks for the clarification.
Another chapter on "Why the UN is as useless as tits on a boar"
From Breitbart/AP:
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday whether some of the city’s police officers could be deployed with U.N. peacekeeping missions.
Recruiting police for the U.N.’s 16 peacekeeping missions around the globe has been historically challenging.“New York City has one of the most diversified police forces around and I think the secretary-general would like to explore possibilities,” U.N. deputy spokeswoman Marie Okabe said before the meeting. “Getting police to join peacekeeping operations is one of the high priorities for the U.N.”
Bloomberg left the meeting without speaking to reporters. Stu Loeser, the mayor’s spokesman, said his office had no comment.
New York City has recently fallen short of its police recruiting goals so it’s unclear if it would have any officers to spare for international peacekeeping.
The U.N. peacekeeping department said 321 American police officers are currently involved in missions abroad, primarily training local police. Of those, 225 are in the Kosovo region of Yugoslavia, and others are in Haiti, Liberia and Sudan.
We all knew the UN had no teeth when it comes to…well, when it comes to anything. They issue of a lot of platitudinous claptrap on a daily basis, but when push comes to shove, no one thinks highly enough of the UN to commit their own country’s resources. So where does the UN turn to staff their “peacekeeping” missions? Their perennial whipping boy, the United States. It’s like they’re telling us “You suck! You’re a bunch of imperialist pigs who resist our One World Order agenda! By the way, can we borrow some of your cops for our useless missions?”
Quote of the day
Thanks to Opinionnation for alerting me to this. Via Hot Air:
Jay Leno: Well, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards as well as a number of other Democratic candidates say they will not participate in a presidential debate next month because the debate is on Fox News and Fox News is biased. Well, how are you going to stand up to terrorists when you’re afraid of Fox News? [audience laughter]
Nicely done, Jay!
