Shrillary calls on another corrupt Dem to run her campaign

Looking to one-up her decision to use an impeached federal judge to help her ascension in power, Her Highness has enlisted the help of another corrupt Democrat, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ). From the AP:

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton announced on Tuesday that New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez (news, bio, voting record) will serve as co-chair of her presidential campaign, providing her with a strong link to the Hispanic community.

In a joint news conference, the New York senator said she appreciates Menendez’ support and called him “the embodiment of the American dream.”

If, by “the American dream”, she means profiting from a business arrangement with a publicly funded non-profit organization, then Menendez is indeed such an “embodiment”. It’s like the Clintons just can’t help themselves when it comes to associating with corruption.

NH middle school kids taken to Planned Parenthood for field trip

From New Hampshire:

The city school board early this morning voted for an investigation into last week’s field trip that brought middle school students to a Planned Parenthood office in Manchester.

The school board instructed school administrators to investigate the matter, recommend any changes needed to school policies and decide if any disciplinary action needs to be taken.

“It needs to happen immediately,” Mayor Frank Guinta said about the investigation. He said it shouldn’t take more than a few days.

The vote took place in the early morning hours, after school board members adopted a 2008 budget and huddled with lawyers for two hours.

On Wednesday, students in the STAY program, a program for at-risk middle school students that is operated by the YMCA, visited the Planned Parenthood offices as part of a field trip to social service agencies throughout the city.

They were confronted by pro-life groups who normally picket the agency.

School board member Doug Kruse yesterday said the field trip violated the trust of parents.

“The STAY program must go because they have not demonstrated they are responsible for our children,” Kruse said.

He also pointed out that Dawn Michaud, the principal at Parkside Middle School, told the New Hampshire Union Leader that she was aware if the visit, but told her supervisors she had no knowledge of the stop.

“Somebody doesn’t have their story straight,” Kruse said.

Assistant Superintendent Frank Bass said Michaud was flustered by a call from a reporter and was not sure what was happening.

I don’t give a wet fart on a dry January Monday what your views on abortion happen to be, because I think those views are irrelevant in this case. Wrong is wrong, and these kids, entrusted to the care of the YMCA, should NOT have been taken to an abortion mill under any circumstances. Period.

Headline of the day, part II

This one actually is a headline, from FNC: “Iowa Woman Named Butts Charged With Theft of Court’s Toilet Paper”. Details:

Police blame a woman named Butts for stealing toilet paper from an Iowa courthouse, and while they are chuckling, the theft charge could land her in jail.

“She’s facing potentially three years of incarceration for three rolls of toilet paper,” Chief Lon Walker said, stifling a laugh as he talked to KCCI-TV about Suzanne Marie Butts.

Workers at the Marshall County Courthouse had noticed toilet paper rolls were disappearing much faster than usual, Walker said.

Butts, 38, was caught last week after an employee saw her taking three rolls of two-ply tissue from a storage closet, Walker said.

Butts insisted it was the first time she had pilfered toilet paper, but she declined to answer further questions on her attorney’s advice.

The fifth-degree theft charge, a misdemeanor, normally carries a sentence of less than a year in jail. But Butts could face more time if convicted under the state’s habitual offender law because she has prior theft convictions.

Walker said Butts did not work at the courthouse and it was unclear why she was there.

Thanks to Kanaka Girl for the tip.

Headline of the day

OK, not technically a headline, but the opening line in an article by the NYT:

THE probability of a nuclear weapon one day going off in an American city cannot be calculated, but it is larger than it was five years ago.

Umm…’kay. I’ll ask the obvious: if the probability of something cannot be calculated, then how in the world do you know that the probability is higher now than it was before?

Denver asking for "personal sacrifice" to fight global "warming"

From Denver:

Denver is gearing up to fight global warming, and residents may soon be asked to make personal sacrifices to help save the planet.
The new plan is aimed at making Denver a national leader in reducing gas emissions that have been linked to global warming, giving a major push to alternative energy, stepping up recycling and changing building codes to encourage energy conservation.

I wonder if said “sacrifice” to fighting global “warming” includes giving extra coats to the needy…because it’s been freezing #ss cold in Denver! Details:

Residents of Colorado’s Front Range awoke Friday morning to frost-covered windshields as temperatures dropped to the lowest readings in over 50 years.

Just one day later they were at local pools enjoying temperatures in the mid-80s.

The temperature at Denver International Airport fell to 31 degrees at 5:44 a.m. Friday, setting a new record low for the date.

The previous record for June 8 was 37 degrees, last set in 1974.

In addition to the new record low, the sub-freezing temperatures also became the latest freeze on record for the city of Denver and the second-coldest June temperature ever recorded.

The previous date of latest freeze on record was June 2, 1951.

Temperatures in Denver have only dropped below freezing two other times during the month of June; 32 degrees on June 1, 1919 and 30 degrees on June 2, 1951.

The data doesn’t lie: 9 of the 12 warmest years in Denver occurred before 1955, which would be before the advent of SUV’s and all of the other things that the enviro-Chicken Littles blame for man-made global “warming”. But hey, if it makes Denver feel better to act like they’re “doing something”, then I say “Knock yourselves out.”

Speaking of enviro-kooks, recall the the Kyoto Protocol (which our Senate rejected 95-0), which exempted countries like China and India from pollution standards that would be imposed on the U.S.? Considering that China is reportedly polluting 2/3 of their cities’ air and water, it doesn’t take a genius to see that the main motivation behind the global “warming” crowd who crafted Kyoto was to destroy the United States economy. Otherwise, why exempt the biggest polluters of the world?

George Will knocks Fred Thompson

According to Captain’s Quarters, a “swing and a miss”:

George Will attempts to pop the Fred Thompson boomlet in his latest Newsweek column. Unfortunately for Will, Fred Thompson is not the lightweight cipher he dismisses so casually, and the normally excellent Will winds up looking a little bit of a lightweight himself:
Some say he is the Republicans’ Rorschach test: They all see in him what they crave. Or he might be the Republicans’ dot-com bubble, the result of restless political investors seeking value that the untutored eye might not discern and that might be difficult to quantify but which the investors are sure must be there, somewhere, somehow.

One does not want to be unfair to Thompson, who may have hidden depths. But ask yourself this: If he did not look like a basset hound who had just read a sad story—say, “Old Yeller”—and if he did not talk like central casting’s idea of the god Sincerity, would anyone think he ought to be entrusted with the nation’s nuclear arsenal? He is an actor, and, as a Hollywood axiom says, the key to acting is sincerity—if you can fake that, you’ve got it made.

This is, of course, all about another actor. Republicans have scrutinized the current crop of presidential candidates and succumbed to the psychosomatic disease Reagan Deprivation. It is, however, odd that many Republicans who advertise their admiration for Reagan are so ready to describe Thompson as Reaganesque because he … what?

First and foremost, Will has both Reagan and Thompson wrong in the same manner that people dismissed Reagan in his political career. Thompson has a long career as more than just an actor. Thompson’s acting career was accidental; his political career was much more deliberate. He made his name as a reforming activist lawyer, first with Watergate, and second in exposing corruption in the Tennessee governor’s office. And like Reagan but in a much shorter time frame, he has spent the last several months delivering speeches and papers on issues.

Thompson first came to national attention by working with Senator Howard Baker on the Watergate committee. It was Thompson who brought out the Oval Office taping system that captured all of Richard Nixon’s incriminating conversations. Thompson also asked the critical question: “What did the President know, and when did he know it?”

Afterwards, Thompson pursued a case of pardons-for-bribes corruption in Tennessee. He represented Marie Ragghianti, a whistleblower who uncovered the corruption. With Thompson’s help, a number of Tennessee state officials went to prison, and while Governor Ray Blanton managed to remain free, his political career was finished. The film Marie tells the story based on the Peter Maas book, and Thompson played himself. That started his improbable Hollywood career; he did not train to be an actor, but a lawyer and a clean-government activist.

Will’s description of Thompson manages to miss all that, as well as the eight years he served in the Senate. That isn’t an extraordinarily long time, but it’s the same amount of experience Ronald Reagan had as a public officeholder when he ran for President in 1976 and 1980, although Reagan’s experience was as an executive. Reagan had ten years on the lecture circuit talking politics before he won election as California’s governor, but Thompson has had plenty of real-life experience in politics before he became, in Will’s dismissive tone, “an actor”.

Thompson is a lot more than 99 percent charm. His speeches and writings have very clearly defined his driving philosophy as a federalist, and his track record as a reformer needs no apologetics to anyone except Will. He has to answer for his record on campaign-finance reform as well as the rest of his votes and actions, of course, but that’s what all candidates have to do when they run for President.

George Will mostly hits home runs with his columns, whether on politics or baseball. In this case, he whiffed.

I have no idea if I’d support Thompson or not, since he has yet to declare or debate or anything. But I’m not willing to trash the guy before I know anything about his views or votes or anything like that, especially since he does seem to have a distinguished political career (at least, as far as law enforcement goes…legislatively, I’m not so sure).
