Those ungrateful Cubans!

From the admittedly biased Beeb:

Cuban athletes have made a hurried departure from the Pan-American games in Brazil, apparently amid fears of possible mass defections.

The delegation was rushed at short notice to Rio de Janeiro’s airport, leaving the men’s volleyball team no time to collect their bronze medals.

The athletes were said to have been ordered to leave the games before the finishing ceremony on Sunday.

It follows the defection of four Cuban athletes earlier in the tournament.

Cuba’s President, Fidel Castro, has already made clear his irritation over earlier defections, accusing athletes of betraying their country for money.

“Betrayal for money is one of the favourite weapons of the United States to destroy Cuba’s resistance,” he said.

Here’s guessing that these ungrateful hombres didn’t go see Moore’s new mockumentary Sicko. Don’t these ingrates know how good they have it down in that socialist worker’s “paradise”?

(Sidebar: Notice that there are always tons of Cubans risking life and limb to get out of Cuba…but you never see any kind of migration into Cuba? I’m sure that doesn’t mean anything, though.)

    Are Cubans entering the United States illegally any different than Mexicans entering the US illegally?

    Gloss over the fact we made it legal with the feet wet/dry policy we have in effect now. Could that not be considered amnesty?

    Why not offer something similar for Mexicans? Stay here without getting in trouble for … however long and you get a pass?

    I don’t advocate any of this but these were just some thoughts I had and was curious to what folks here thought.

    Yes and no. “No, it’s no different”, in that if Cubans are caught before they hit the land, they’re here illegally, just like anyone else is here illegally. It’s kind of a stupid policy, if you ask me, but the law is the law until it changes.

    And “Yes, it’s quite different”, in that there is no way for a Cuban to legally be granted access to America by Castro. He runs the Hotel California: you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave his island gulag.

    For me personally, that this policy is the law means I cannot gloss over it. Our immigration laws, even ones as questionable as “wet foot/dry foot”, should be enforced. If they suck, then change them to laws that suck less.

    One could argue that yes, “wet foot/dry foot” is a form of amnesty. I guess I feel somewhat differently towards Cubans because they have no legal way to get here, whereas other countries’ citizens do. But in the end, the law is the law.
