Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

UPDATE: Double dose of D.C. corruption

Corruption on the GOP side:

The FBI and IRS have searched the home of Republican Sen. Ted Stevens in a ski resort in Alaska as part of an investigation into his links with an oil-services company, officials said on Monday.

“The FBI and IRS are conducting a court-authorized search warrant in Girdwood, Alaska,” an FBI spokesman said in Washington, but gave no further details.

Stevens is the subject of a grand-jury investigation into his links with managers of VECO Corp., the state’s largest oil-services company, as well as numerous unrelated fisheries matters.

In May, Bill Allen, then the chief executive of VECO, along with a vice president, Rick Smith, pleaded guilty to several federal corruption charges. The two admitted paying over $400,000 to bribe Alaska lawmakers.

Allen had been a financial supporter of Stevens’ campaigns and a partner with him on a race horse. He also oversaw the a project to remodel Stevens’ Girdwood home in 2000, vetting bills and construction work.

The Anchorage Daily News has reported that contractors who worked on the remodeling of Stevens’ home had their records subpoenaed by the federal grand jury.

Don’t get so giddy, Dems.  Your side’s hands aren’t exactly clean these days, either:

From Jack Murtha’s lips to God’s ear. Take your pick: Tom Coburn’s snazzy multicolored chart or N.Z. Bear’s bullet points of death. Despite the unusually bipartisan blogospheric coverage of the secret hold last year, despite the numerous unflattering stories since about Democrats not doing enough to trim pork, despite Murtha’s embarrassing threat against Mike Rogers and the subsequent “lost earmark,” despite all the windage about their allegedly exacting ethical standards, despite a public approval rating that’s in the toilet and circling the drain, they felt comfortable enough to take one of their few genuine legislative accomplishments and tear it to pieces. Why? Because this isn’t a “sexy” issue and they know the public won’t pay attention to it, blog and (cursory) media coverage notwithstanding. Same as with the bankruptcy bill last year.

Just in case they want to escape scrutiny should they ever decide to do what Stevens did?

UPDATE (7/31/2007 – 6:14 P.M. EST): Rush asks an excellent question, in light of the Ted Stevens raid:

The only thing I’m waiting for out there is, when is the raid on Searchlight, Nevada? There’s a prominent US Senator that lives there, and there have been countless stories in the Los Angeles Times about shady land deals with his sons who are lobbyists and so forth. We are speaking here, of course, of the exalted Dingy Harry. So while they’re raiding Ted Stevens, where’s the raid in Searchlight, Nevada?

Quote of the day

Actually, more like “euphemism of the day”, from the Washington Times:

Mexico is calling on the United States to alter a plan to expand border fences designed to stem illegal immigration, saying the barriers would threaten migratory species accustomed to roaming freely across the frontier.

Such “migratory species accustomed to roaming freely across the frontier” include birds, insects, bears…and illegal aliens! But I’m just sure that our amigos to the South are only looking at it from an environmental standpoint, right?

Tax General Motors!

As much as the politicians are bellyaching about “windfall profits”, perhaps they should look at GM for “gouging”, huh? From Motown:

General Motors Corp., the largest U.S. automaker, reported an $891-million profit for the second quarter of the year, driven by strong sales in emerging global markets and reduced costs from its restructuring efforts.

“We again saw improved results in sales, income and cash flow this quarter, driven by the continued successful implementation of our business strategies,” said Rick Wagoner, GM chairman and chief executive officer.

Nonsense! This is clearly a case of gouging the little guy, and we should teach these greedy b#stards a lesson: success in America will NOT be tolerated, and the proper remedy is confiscatory taxes. Get Durbin the Turban on this, pronto.

For those of you on the left, the above was sarcasm.

Jihadist fights to stay at Club Gitmo

Club Gitmo is so much of a torturous hellhole that…a jihadist is suing to stay there! From FNC:

An inmate of Guantanamo Bay who spends 22 hours each day in an isolation cell is fighting for the right to stay in the notorious internment camp.

Ahmed Belbacha fears that he will be tortured or killed if the United States goes ahead with plans to return him to his native Algeria.

The London Times reported that Belbacha, who lived in Britain for three years, has filed an emergency motion at the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., asking for his transfer out of Guantanamo to be halted. He was cleared for release from Camp Delta in February and his lawyers believe that his return to Algerian custody is imminent.

Belbacha says that if he returns to Algeria, he faces the threat of torture by security services and murder by Islamist terrorists.

“Ahmed is being held in camp six, the harshest part of Guantanamo,” he said. “His cell is all steel, there are no windows, he is not allowed to communicate with other prisoners and he gets just two hours exercise each day in a metal cage.

“He says his cell in Guantanamo is like a grave and that, although it sounds crazy, he would rather stay in those conditions than go back to Algeria. The fact is that he is really, really scared about what might happen to him in Algeria.”

I imagine that the lemon-pepper orange roughy with dates and honey that he gets at Club Gitmo aren’t everyday fare on the mean streets of Algiers, though.

Dem Whip admits what we’ve always known: Good news for America = Bad news for Dems

Here’s your obligatory “Feel free to question their patriotism” disclaimer. From the Washington comPost:

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Monday that a strongly positive report on progress on Iraq by Army Gen. David Petraeus likely would split Democrats in the House and impede his party’s efforts to press for a timetable to end the war.

Clyburn, in an interview with the washingtonpost.com video program PostTalk, said Democrats might be wise to wait for the Petraeus report, scheduled to be delivered in September, before charting next steps in their year-long struggle with President Bush over the direction of U.S. strategy.

Clyburn noted that Petraeus carries significant weight among the 47 members of the Blue Dog caucus in the House, a group of moderate to conservative Democrats. Without their support, he said, Democratic leaders would find it virtually impossible to pass legislation setting a timetable for withdrawal.

Many Democrats have anticipated that, at best, Petraeus and U.S. ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker would present a mixed analysis of the success of the current troop surge strategy, given continued violence in Baghdad. But of late there have been signs that the commander of U.S. forces might be preparing something more generally positive. Clyburn said that would be “a real big problem for us.”

There you have it, from the jackass’ mouth: Success in Iraq is “a real big problem for” Democrats. But hey…they “support the troops”, right?

LA Times: Jail Scooter Libby, but free Johnny Taliban

Un-freakin’-believable! From Moonbattery:

Incredible. The libs at the Los Angeles Times are actually demanding that John Walker Lindh, aka Johnny Taliban, be let out of jail:

According to La Times, Scooter Libby did not deserve to have his sentence commuted — but the American Taliban does, on the grounds that he joined the Taliban “to fight the Northern Alliance, not the United States” and because:

He never engaged in terrorism; indeed, his commitment to Islam leads him to oppose the targeting of civilians.

Funny, Islam doesn’t seem to have that effect on other Muslims taking part in their terror war against the entire civilized world, with the tacit if not explicit support of pretty much all of Dar al Islam.

In case you forgot why this spoilt Marin County moonbat belongs in jail (since it appears a firing squad is too much to ask for), here are a few excerpts from the Grand Jury’s indictment:

In or about late May or June 2001, LINDH agreed to attend an al-Qaeda training camp for additional and extensive military training, knowing that America and its citizens were the enemies of Bin Laden and al-Qaeda and that a principal purpose of al-Qaeda was to fight and kill Americans.

In or about June and July 2001, LINDH remained at the al-Farooq camp and participated fully in its training activities, after having been told early in his stay at the camp that Bin Laden had sent forth some fifty people to carry out twenty suicide terrorist operations against the United States and Israel.

In or about June or July 2001, LINDH met personally with Bin Laden, who thanked him and other trainees for taking part in jihad.

After learning about the terrorist attacks against the United States on or about September 11, 2001, LINDH remained with his fighting group. LINDH did so despite having been told that Bin Laden had ordered the attacks, that additional terrorist attacks were planned, and that additional al Qaeda personnel were being sent from the training camps to the front lines to protect Bin Laden and defend against an anticipated military response from the United States.

From in or about October through early December 2001, LINDH remained with his fighting group after learning that United States military forces and United States nationals had become directly engaged in support of the Northern Alliance in its military conflict with Taliban and al Qaeda forces.

Johnny Taliban also participated in a prison uprising that resulted in the death of CIA agent Johnny Michael Spann. Even a merciful execution is really more than Lindh deserves, but our MSM weeps over his unfortunate fate and wants him set free. Apparently it sees a kindred spirit.

Perjury wasn’t that big of a deal when a Democrat president was accused of it, but all of a sudden, it’s even worse than fighting alongside the enemy and abetting the murder of a CIA agent. Idiots.
