“NASA quietly fixes flawed temperature data; 1998 was NOT the warmest year in the millenium”

Posted in global warming at 8:24 am by crushliberalism

More proof that global “warming” is a hoax, and that an American agency is participating in (nay, aiding and abetting) the perpetrating of said hoax. From Michelle Malkin:

Some big environmental news that you haven’t heard much about: NASA has revised much-publicized US temperature data that have been used to claim 1998 as a record-breaking hottest year in the millenium. Michael Asher at DailyTech reports:

My earlier column this week detailed the work of a volunteer team to assess problems with US temperature data used for climate modeling. One of these people is Steve McIntyre, who operates the site climateaudit.org. While inspecting historical temperature graphs, he noticed a strange discontinuity, or “jump” in many locations, all occurring around the time of January, 2000.

These graphs were created by NASA’s Reto Ruedy and James Hansen (who shot to fame when he accused the administration of trying to censor his views on climate change). Hansen refused to provide [McIntyre ]with the algorithm used to generate graph data, so McKintyre reverse-engineered it. The result appeared to be a Y2K bug in the handling of the raw data.

[McIntyre] notified the pair of the bug; Ruedy replied and acknowledged the problem as an “oversight” that would be fixed in the next data refresh.

NASA has now silently released corrected figures, and the changes are truly astounding. The warmest year on record is now 1934. 1998 (long trumpeted by the media as record-breaking) moves to second place. 1921 takes third. In fact, 5 of the 10 warmest years on record now all occur before World War II. Anthony Watts has put the new data in chart form, along with a more detailed summary of the events.

The effect of the correction on global temperatures is minor (some 1-2% less warming than originally thought), but the effect on the US global warming propaganda machine could be huge.

Then again– maybe not. I strongly suspect this story will receive little to no attention from the mainstream media.

McIntyre also debunked the famous “hockey stick” analysis linking human activity to global warming, which turned out to be an artifact of poor mathematics.

Bottom line:

According to the new data published by NASA, 1998 is no longer the hottest year ever. 1934 is. Four of the top 10 years of US CONUS high temperature deviations are now from the 1930s: 1934, 1931, 1938 and 1939, while only 3 of the top 10 are from the last 10 years (1998, 2006, 1999). Several years (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004) fell well down the leaderboard, behind even 1900. (World rankings of temperature are calculated separately.)

In other words: Four of the top ten are in the 1930’s, before mainstream scientists believe humans had any discernible impact on temperatures.

More reax on the James Hansen factor:

Ace: “So James Hansen, who claimed Bush was politicizing Global Warming, refused to provide his algorithms to other researchers so they could simply check his work, hiding his own errors from them and distorting the science he claims to care about oh-so-much until some persistent researchers went to the great trouble of reconstructing his algorithms themselves. Fire him. Immediately.” …

There’s more there, for those who are interested in some more of the scientific findings, but the bottom line is simply this: there is no proof that global “warming” is real or man-made, this finding proves that, and NASA’s attempt to hide contradictory data also proves it.

Global warming, for me, is 50/50. I think at some point carbon emissions will affect it, but also there’s obviously a cyclical trend to cooling and warming. Meh. Won’t stop me from driving, and I want a hybrid for cost savings.

Exactly right, Wailin. In the late 1970’s, we were supposed to see a coming Ice Age. A mere two decades later, we’re baking to death. Go figure.

I ticked off a colleague of mine when she was complaining about how cold it was in January and February, and how hot it’s been thus far in August. I told her that “Rumor has it that the phenomenon to which you’re referring is what’s known as…seasons!” I can be such a smart#ss sometimes…no, really, I can! :D

As for the hybrid, I read recently where it makes a bigger carbon footprint to manufacture them than to manufacture gas-guzzlers. How’s that for irony? I am 100% in agreement with you, though, in terms of buying them for saving money on gas.

You have mistakenly filed this post under “global warming.” It should be filed under “local warming.”

The correction recently discovered makes 1934 the hottest single year on record for the LOWER 48 STATES OF THE U.S. For the globe, the hottest single year on record is still a “statistical tie” between 1998 and 2005. In fact, nothing before 1990 even comes CLOSE to what we’ve seen in the last decade. Nothing even comes close.

But those like you who are eager to deny the truth, are all too eager to change the subject, from global to local.

Nope, no mistake. But thanks for offering.

You mean the “truth” that NASA and other global “warming” Chicken Littles modify or hide from us? Got it. Thanks for the clarification.

    Wailin,
I agree with much of what you say. I’m not one who is convinced all of the warming, if any, is man made. But at the same time putting pollutants into the air, and water and on the land can not be totally good for the environment. I don’t advocate massive government control, just reasonable and truthful education of the populace. To me, I can put something in the recycle bin as easily as throw it in the trash. When fishing, hunting, I can choose to take of certain size or gender that will not decimate the population. I can plant trees when cutting down others and I can use fertilizers and other chemicals that are not so harmful. Or as you said, buy a more fuel efficient car. Many are not aware of the little economical changes one can make that could make a big difference in the world we live in. Education, and market forces, not governmental legislation is the answer to solve any problems that we are creating to the environment.

I still don’t believe a climatologist who claims that in 50 years the temperature will raise 4 degrees. When they can accurately forecast the temperature for next weekend, WITHIN 4 DEGREES, then I might reconsider.
But if there really is a warming…… then who can say that’s a bad thing? Who says that our current climate is the ideal climate for all time?
