Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

It’s not the war in Iraq, stupid

Euros are genuinely surprised by this, despite the fact that we’ve been saying it for years now. From Texas Rainmaker:

Despite all the rhetoric from the Left about how President Bush has created more terrorists and American foreign policy has made the world more dangerous, folks in Europe are starting to get a clue about the real culprits.

Since the terror attacks on the United States on Sept. 11 six years ago, Europe has faced far more new attacks and reported plots than the United States.

Europeans on the Fight Against Terrorism Train bombings in Madrid three years ago killed 191 people, the London transit attack two years ago killed 52 commuters, and a string of plots have been discovered and foiled. Then last week, arrests were made in Germany in a plot that the police said could have caused even worse carnage than in Madrid or London.
[…]
France and Germany both opposed the war in Iraq, and both countries have been targets of terrorist plots by Islamist extremists, noted François Heisbourg, a French expert on terrorism and a special adviser to the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris.

“Bush is incredibly reviled in Germany, and Iraq is viewed as a total disaster, which it is,” he said. “But it doesn’t lead people to say we have terror because of Bush. Why? Because these guys strike a country that is against the Iraq policy.”

Ding, ding, ding. This has never been about President Bush’s foreign policy. These islamic nutjobs have been attacking innocent civilians for ages as they pursue their retarded ideas of access to the afterlife.

Now do you Euros get it?

  1. Terrorism clearly existed before President Bush, and regardless of who is in office, the U.S. has been a target – there was at least one attempt on the WTC prior to 9/11, if not more. There have been suicide bombings all over the world.

With regards to the situation in Iraq, however, I would say that the invasion of Iraq has created an unstable, and clearly more violent environment there. Saddam Hussein was a monster, but he was not responsible for the 9/11 attacks, which was the initial reason for invading Iraq. Followed by weapons of mass destruction, followed by needing to “free” the Iraqi people. By invading Iraq, I believe that we have added additional instability to an already unstable region. I also believe that the situation in Iraq is held up by terrorists, specifically Al Qaeda, as an example of how the U.S. is evil, and should be fought against. The situation in Iraq is probably used as a recruiting tool, and any and all people who have assisted the U.S. in Iraq, whether they agree with the policy or not, become targets.

I do not believe that we should be in Iraq at all. I feel like we took a sharp right turn, when we should have continued pursing terrorists where we knew them to be.

That said, and as much as I wish the troops could come home, I believe that, since we are there, we’d better do a damn good job, and we’d better finish the job. Otherwise, we’ll have a bigger mess on our hands than when we started.

  2. I fear the Euro’s may be too far gone, but we can still hope.

Claiming that the initial reason for going into Iraq was Saddam’s connection to 9-11 clearly demonstrates lack of research and mindless parroting of anti-war talking points. Public Law 107-243 states a multitude of reasons for taking military action against Saddam and Iraq. The mention of 9-11 is tenth on the list, and never claims that Saddam was connected to 9-11, only that Iraq was known to be harboring al-Qaeda terrorists, who are responsible for multiple attacks on US interests including the 9-11 atacks. So, as Alex says, we have been pursuing terrorists where we know them to be.

  3. Not only that but Iraq has created a focus point for us to engage al-Qaeda. With them focusing their efforts on attacking us in Iraq they have been stretched to the point that they cannot effectively mount significant strikes against us here.

If they want to fight us, let them. It is better to let them do so in the streets of Baghdad, versus the streets of New York. Sorry, if that sounds callous, but that is the truth.

  4. “Public Law 107-243 states a multitude of reasons for taking military action against Saddam and Iraq.”

Public Law 107-243 would have never seen the light of day if Bush, Powell, and others hadn’t been playing the fear card so well in the media in the months leading up to the Invasion.

Simple fact is we (and I mean we as a country, not just this administration) have taken our eyes off the ball and now chances are its just the same tired old story over again.

  5. “Public Law 107-243 would have never seen the light of day if Bush, Powell, and others hadn’t been playing the fear card…”

If by “others” you mean Nancy Panderosi, Slow Joe, Dingy Harry, Shrillary, Silky Pony, et. al., why don’t you just say so, Vince?

Nice try on diverting attention away from Alex’s bogus claims that the initial reason for going into Iraq was Saddam’s connection to 9-11, and for trying to lay the blame for PL 107-243 passing solely at the feet of Republicans, even though a majority of Dhimmicrats voted in the affirmative.

  6. I agree. We should pull out of Iraq now. Why waste time with the arms when you can kill the head? ALL those troops are going to be needed for the Iran invasion.
