Biden: Iowa schools better than DC schools due to fewer blacks
When he’s not waxing eloquent about the clean, bright, articulate Negro in the race or about the prevelance of Indians at 7-11 stores, he’s busy explaining how Iowan kids do better in schools than those in the nation’s capital. From CNN’s blog:
In what the Washington Post is describing as a “stumble,” Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said in an interview with the paper Wednesday that Washington’s high minority population is one of the reasons for the city’s education problems.
Explaining why schools in Iowa are performing better than those in Washington, D.C., Biden told the Post, “There’s less than one percent of the population of Iowa that is African American. There is probably less than four of five percent that are minorities. What is in Washington? So look, it goes back to what you start off with, what you’re dealing with.”
Exit question (and yes, I know you see this one coming): What would the level of outrage been had, say, Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani or “Teh Fred” said the same thing?

I’m not sure what the level would have been but I’ll bet the outrage would have included comments from the Rev’s Jackson and Sharpton and even more rage from Rangell.

What a racist moron!
Blaming black students rather than the Washington DC teachers ineptitude!
So what of the black students in Iowa could it be that they are faring better because the teachers are good teachers.
I hate the self-righteous demands for racial awareness and sensitivity from the left!
I’m looking forward to the staged apology from this closet bigot.
I guess that comeback about “It takes one to know” would be the best comeback to all the accusations of racism and intolerance!

“What a racist moron!

Chilerkle, That’s rediculous. Yes, the remark was poorly stated and Biden should apologize, but he’s no bigot. Everyone knows that there is a strong coorelation between socio-economic level and educational achievement. All Biden was trying to say that the poor and predominatly African-American population will not achieve to the same degree as the predominatly white, middle class students in Iowa because they do not have the same resources and support. This sort of thing has been documented in study after study, and though there are exceptions, Biden’s remark reflects the reality. Biden was just speaking honestly, which can be difficult to do, especially about race.
And what do you really know about about teachers in D.C.? Do you honestly think the same teacher can achieve the same results in a classroom in the worst parts of D.C as in the average Iowa classroom? No way. Yes there are exceptions, and good teachers are incredible assets, but overall, the raw materials (and this has more to do with socio-economic background than inherent intelligence) will have the greatest bearing on the results. To say the the problem lies in teacher ineptitude reflects total ignorance and a desire to dimiss a problem too easily.
Anyway, back to main point. Yes, what a blunder the comment was. Joe is usually more articulate and long winded than that and would tend to express the overall point more thoroughly before coming right to race. Too bad people usually stop listening. However, few people are accusing him of racism (other than folks such as yourself, Jonathan) because they know he is not racist.

Is it too late for him to claim he just stole it from someone else’s campaign speech?

What WMD_Maker said. Sometimes the truth slips out. Call me racist if you like, but I will respond with the facts.

I think we’ve just heard from the sole supporter of Joe Biden.
How many times are you going to cover for Biden by saying “what he really means is…”
Comment by tnjack | October 29, 2007
Biden makes an honest observation, based on statisical fact.
How did he ever survive in American Politics?
Go ahead. Scream “Racist” at me. But even the most “Liberal” in D.C. send their kids to private school, and live in gated neighborhoods.
Sad thing is… When Chicago and St. Louis tore down their worst projects the refuse that was flushed out started drifting into Iowa. Look what generous social programs get you.
Look up “Iowa City Public Schools” and see what happened. There has been a huge increase in violence, and a decrease in test scores. Oddly, no can say why. (or won’t. Iowa City is liberal democrat)
Looks like private schools will be the next big thing in Iowa.. for the people who can afford them.
I’m sure those schools will teach a the wonderful rhetoric of multiculturalism, just like the ones for our nation’s leader’s children in D.C.
Hyprocrisy and Irony!
Go ahead, call me a racist. Just remember called me that, the next time you cross the street to avoid a group of people at night.
