Environuts to sue on behalf of polar bears

To paraphrase THE Bruce Dickinson: Treehuggers have a feevah, and the only prescription is more polar bears!  From CNS News:

With the Interior Department failing to meet Wednesday’s deadline to decide whether to list the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, environmental groups say they are ready to take the federal government to court over the matter.

The Center on Biological Diversity initiated the Endangered Species Act listing process for the polar bear with a petition filed in February 2005. The group went to court in December 2005 due to a lack of action by the federal government. In December 2006, the Department of the Interior proposed listing the bear, which triggered Wednesday’s deadline.

“We are making this proposal because scientific review of the species by the Fish and Wildlife Service found that populations may be threatened by receding sea ice, which polar bears use as a platform for many activities essential to their life cycle, including hunting for their main prey, arctic seals,” Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said when the listing was proposed. 

There’s just one problem with that whole “polar bears are dying” thingy:

“The polar bear is not endangered or threatened – its numbers have gone up by five or six-fold since around 1950 as a result of changes in management and hunting,” he said. “Most of the populations seem to be doing well and prospering.

“The alleged threats to the bear are based on highly speculative computer models, and if you put in the right assumptions, you will come up with very negative consequences for the polar bear and no doubt for other species as well,” Ebell charged. “I don’t think they are scientific evidence at all,” he added calling the computer models “shaky science.” 

Man, facts can just be brutal sometimes! Why do facts hate polar bears?

    The two populations that are increasing, both in north-eastern Canada, were severely reduced by hunting in the past and are recovering thanks to the protection they and their prey now enjoy.

    The best-studied population, in Canada’s western Hudson Bay, fell by 22% from 1194 animals in 1987 to 935 in 2004, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. A second group in the Beaufort Sea, off Alaska’s north coast, is now experiencing the same pattern of reduced adult weights and cub survival as the Hudson Bay group.

    A comprehensive review (pdf) by the US Fish and Wildlife Service concluded that shrinking sea ice is the primary cause for the decline seen in these populations, and it recently proposed listing polar bears as threatened (pdf) under the Endangered Species Act. The World Conservation Union projects the bears’ numbers will drop by 30% by 2050 (pdf) due to continued loss of Arctic sea ice.

    Anywho, I’m not going to let some leftard bunnyhugger lecture ME about facts, when you guys never use them (or when you do use facts, you’re pretty selective about which ones you’ll use).

    The facts are clear: polar bear populations are about 600% what they were in 1950. The World Conservation Union is making projections based on the same type of sloppy computer models that have hyped the junk science fad/scam known as man-made global “warming”, so those can be rejected.

    Nice try, though. Don’t you have a tree to go sit in and protest some capitalistic endeavor?
