Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

About that “650,000 dead” study…

From the UK:

A STUDY that claimed 650,000 people were killed as a result of the invasion of Iraq was partly funded by the antiwar billionaire George Soros.

Soros, 77, provided almost half the £50,000 cost of the research, which appeared in The Lancet, the medical journal. Its claim was 10 times higher than consensus estimates of the number of war dead.

I’m sure that was just a big coinkidink.

The study, published in 2006, was hailed by antiwar campaigners as evidence of the scale of the disaster caused by the invasion, but Downing Street and President George Bush challenged its methodology.

New research published by The New England Journal of Medicine estimates that 151,000 people – less than a quarter of The Lancet estimate – have died since the invasion in 2003.

The authors should have disclosed the [Soros] donation and for many people that would have been a disqualifying factor in terms of publishing the research,” said Michael Spagat, economics professor at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Ya think???  But no, an agenda was set, and facts weren’t about to get in the way, were they?

  1. Although I certainly agree that the numbers were wildly exaggerated and amount to nothing but hard left propaganda (especially since it was partially funded by Soros), I think the numbers (650,000) were referring to “casualties” rather than how many people were killed as a result of the invasion.

That being said, I think that almost all studies are a farce…because they always come to the conclusion that the person or group that is funding them wants them to.

  2. Even thought the real number is less than a quarter of the number in the report, it is still an appallingly high number. Gotta figure out something!
Do you honestly think, though, that any of the up-and-coming politicians are good for the USofA? Check out this very funny vid of all of them.. http://urlbrief.com/48790f

  3. Denise,

    Welcome. Thanks for your comment.

Yes, the number is indeed quite high. But if someone wildly inflates a number like that (and intentionally does so), it’s safe to dismiss anything else they have to say.

And no, I’m not hot and bothered over any of the candidates right now. Some I like, most I don’t, but none of them have me going “Wow, now THIS is the one I’d love to see running the show!” The closest is Mitt Romney, and those who have been here for a while can tell you that I’m just lukewarm about him.

And yes, the video is funny…thanks! :-D
