"We have lost the understanding that in a democracy, we have a mutual obligation to one another — that we cannot measure the greatness of our society by the strongest and richest of us, but we have to measure our greatness by the least of these. That we have to compromise and sacrifice for one another in order to get things done." - Michelle Obama

Beef you hit it right on the head, what she's describing is not a Capitalist Democracy but a Socialists Oligarchy where the educated enlightened few guide all of us to the lowest denominator because it's too hard for the lowest among us to rise up.

What ever happened to individual sacrifice and not compromising ones hopes and ideals in order to pull ones self up in order to get things done! That is the American Way going back to our founding.

Good points all, but what about the line "..we cannot measure the greatness of our society by the strongest and richest of us, but we have to measure our greatness by the least of these."

We should be "defined" by the weakest and poorest of us? This is a lowest common denominator nation? America is a rich nation that most certainly does honor its obligations to those in need - the poorest "of us" do not want for basic levels of food, shelter or even healthcare that billions of people in other countries lack. This "broken souls" nonsense functions merely as a pretext for taking money from the productive class. (The Obamas are now apparently in the business of selling indulgences.) The only way to impose socialism is by keeping people ignorant of history, economics, and the true state of affairs in America. I am afraid we are reaching the tipping point where the people who "get" from the government outnumber those who pay.

Liberal theologians, at least those who involve themselves politically, want the State to take over the role of the Church in providing food, shelter, etc. to the poor. Perhaps they feel it will be more efficient or effective this way. The problem, as I see it, is that charity then ceases to be charity and becomes an entitlement. Charity builds community by voluntarily involving citizens in the problems of other citizens; it doesn't create a sense of entitlement because charity can be withdrawn at will (and the recipient knows this). If you're taxed to death to pay for the indolent, do you really care about them? Or do you despise them?
To paraphrase a well-known text: "Wherever you decide to put your money, that's where your heart will be."
Obama wants your heart, but he'll be satisfied with just your money.
