Security relaxed at Obama rally

I’m sure this is bound to whip the conspiracy nutjobs into a froth, but as much as I hate to say it, I do have to wonder what is going on here.  From Dallas:

Security details at Barack Obama’s rally Wednesday stopped screening people for weapons at the front gates more than an hour before the Democratic presidential candidate took the stage at Reunion Arena.

The order to put down the metal detectors and stop checking purses and laptop bags came as a surprise to several Dallas police officers who said they believed it was a lapse in security.

Dallas Deputy Police Chief T.W. Lawrence, head of the Police Department’s homeland security and special operations divisions, said the order — apparently made by the U.S. Secret Service — was meant to speed up the long lines outside and fill the arena’s vacant seats before Obama came on.

“Sure,” said Lawrence, when asked if he was concerned by the great number of people who had gotten into the building without being checked. But, he added, the turnout of more than 17,000 people seemed to be a “friendly crowd.”  (Oh, well THAT is different!  Sure, Ted Bundy seemed like a ”friendly” fellow…when he wasn’t clubbing someone’s daughter and raping her corpse! – Ed.)

The Secret Service did not return a call from the Star-Telegram seeking comment.

Doors opened to the public at 10 a.m., and for the first hour security officers scanned each person who came in and checked their belongings in a process that kept movement of the long lines at a crawl. Then, about 11 a.m., an order came down to allow the people in without being checked.

Several Dallas police officers said it worried them that the arena was packed with people who got in without even a cursory inspection.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because, they said, the order was made by federal officials who were in charge of security at the event.

“How can you not be concerned in this day and age,” said one policeman.

Unlike the moonbats, I’m not going to shriek that it’s some kind of Rovian Bu$hitler McRummyburton plot to assassinate Osamabamadingdong.  But dude…is this normal?  What gives?

  1. “the order — apparently made by the U.S. Secret Service”

I’m with you, Jon. Conspiracy nuts will (and most assuredly already are) having a field day with this. Just the same, I’m waiting to have “apparently” removed from the equation. This is certainly curious, but I’d like to know precisely who made the command decision before I begin speculating on the motive. Ultimately, it was not the smartest of ideas.

  2. Dallas PD should have told the Secret Service to pound sand, it was their venue and they would run it as they see fit. Dallas has had some bad experience with security issues.

  3. Whats the big deal? Everyone knows the only people going to the rally are moonbats and they dont own guns or have ANY mental problems. You just stop the people who are clean cut, well dressed, shaven and have had a bath. THEY obviously dont belong there.

The rumor is that these “federal officials” were Hillary’s campaign staff? I’m just sayin’?

  5. The rumor-mill continues to churn. According to this:

Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said there was no order from the Secret Service to stop screening people going to the Obama rally Wednesday

“Any allegations to the fact that we had suspended screening or deviated from the original security plan would be entirely inaccurate,” Zahren said.

Seems to be like we have another media myth, most likely generated to give Obama that extra pick-me-over-Old-Sourpuss edge.

“They spoke on condition of anonymity because”

Maybe because the story is a steaming pile of crap?
