Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

DC cops asking residents to hand over their guns and drugs

Police: “Hey, can we come in and take your guns and drugs?  We won’t arrest you.  Scout’s honor!”  I’m sure that’s about as effective as a fart in a tornado.  Considering that the district is about to have their gun ban overturned by the Supreme Court, it seems clear that DC is hoping to clear out as many soon-to-be-lawful guns as possible, out of blind fear that the residents may actually exercise their Second Amendment rights.  Anywho, from DC:

D.C. police are going door-to-door Monday in one of the city’s crime-plagued neighborhoods, asking residents for permission to search their homes for guns and other illegal contraband.

The program, called the Safe Homes Initiative, will offer homeowners and renters limited amnesty for possessing any contraband found by police.

The program is aimed at removing guns and drugs kept by children and young adults in their parents’ homes. The homeowners will be asked to sign a form, consenting to the search…

Ward 8 Councilman Marion Barry supports the initiative’s aims, but has some problems with it.

“I don’t understand it. In fact we will fight against it until we find out what will be the end point,” says Barry. “That’s a parental responsibility. Not the government’s responsibility to know what kids are doing, when they come home, who their friends are and what they have in the house.”

It’s a sad state of affairs when you have a convicted crackhead making the most sense in this situation.

  1. Knock-Knock.

    Homeowner: Who is it?

Police: We are asking residents for permission to search their homes for guns and other illegal contraband.

Homeowner: Do you have a warrant?

    Police: …

    Homeowner: Goodbye.

  2. That’s such an old and tired liberal concept: we’ll trade you hugs for your illegal guns. Why not, since we’re already turning a blind eye to lawbreakers of immigration policy?

  3. That’s a double-shocker. One, that DC would resort to these sort of totalitarian searches, and, two, Marion freakin’ Barry’s response to it.

Then again, he probably doesn’t like cops.

  4. I like that they’re offering “homeowners and renters LIMITED AMNESTY for possessing any contraband found by police.” What, exactly, is “limited amnesty”? You get a free pass on drug possession of less than a kilo, but grandpa’s rusty shotgun gets you the five-year federal minimum?
When Marion Barry starts to make sense, the apocalypse is upon us…

  5. The biggest problem with a goodwill campaign like this is, what happens when you get that knock on your door and say no? Are the drug search and seizure laws loose enough to use a refusal to gain actual warrants on suspicion?

I can’t think of anything as unAmerican as going from door to door in this manner, under guise of amnesty. I can agree nabbing already convicted criminals with a free boat and an arrest, but I can’t wrap my mind around this one.

  6. Interesting as hell that the left thinks so little of the second ammendment that they would flote this plan, but so little of national sovereignty that they will fight tooth and nail from actually monitoring the illegals flooding across our southern border to the tune of around a million/year.

    Cakes and circuses, indeed!
