Go Memphis Tigers!
Props go to my hometown boys from Memphis! The Tigers finally figured out how to shoot free throws, and they scorched the Texas Longhorns 85-67 to reach the Final Four for the first time in 23 years!
I’m not piling on Texas, since I actually had them in my brackets winning this game. Texas has an outstanding team, and they’ve no reason to hang their heads. Hats off to the Longhorns for a great tournament appearance.
Next up…UCLA. They’re looking real good, too, especially to the referees who keep bailing them out (see Cal, Stanford, and Texas A&M). Ought to be a good game.

I have the Tigers going all the way. IMHO they have been too dominant all season.
Comment by Steve | March 30, 2008
I hope you’re right, Steve. I had Texas beating Memphis, and UCLA winning it all. I hate UCLA, but I thought they had the best chance, esp. being blessed with clutch referee-work!
I’d love to see Memphis win it all.

Everyone in my pool has UCLA. It’s probably the good choice. But Memphis just has been soo dominant playing a dificult schedule and UCLA played in a weak conference this year (only 4 of 10 teams made the dance). If UCLA goes down to Memphis, I probably will win the pool weather or not they win the championship.

Steve, don’t talk sports unless you know what you’re talking about. UCLA plays in the PAC-10, who sent 6 teams to the tourney (UCLA, Stanford, WSU, USC, Oregon and Arizona, but you probably couldn’t see all those teams as you were throwing your darts to make your picks) and was considered the second deepest conference in the country next to the Big East. Memphis plays in Conference USA which is down this year to say the least. Memphis is playing well, at least better then UCLA to this point (thumped a talented Texas team that beat UCLA earlier in the year). Should be a great game.
Jonathan only weenies blame the refs.
Go UCLA!!

Joe, I don’t think anyone would argue that C-USA is a tougher conference than the Pac-10. It’s not. I think Steve’s point about strength of schedule is due to the fact that Memphis had the #1 toughest non-conference schedule in the land: UConn, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Siena, USC, Georgetown, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Tennessee. All of those were Big Dance teams, and except for Tenn, all were Memphis wins.
Jonathan only weenies blame the refs.
Heh. I’m not blaming the refs for giving UCLA not one, not two, but three game changing calls. I’m sure they were all big ol’ coinkidinks. But hey, I still have to give UCLA credit for cashing in on the opportunities. Against Stanford, dude still had to hit his free throws, which he did. Against Cal, dude still had to hit his illegal shot over the backboard, which he did. Against Texas A&M, dude still had to foul the bejesus out of the Aggie with the ball on the final drive and get away with it, which he did.
Disclaimer: Don’t take seriously, just bustin your balls.
No offense taken. I never talk trash BEFORE a game, especially one like this one.

No lie, I had all four number 1′s in my bracket. Not being a Memphis State guy I’m sorry to admit Carolina was my final pick, but after seeing the Tigers lately that may be in jeopardy. They can definitely get er done against UCLA and maybe the whole thing if they keep making free throws. Besides, CDR has the Bible on his shoulder.

Go Tigers Go!!!

Again, only weenies complain about refs.
You’re right on the first two calls. They do the best job they can, but officials blow calls all game long and each blown call could impact the outcome of the game, everyone just tends to focus on the last blown call because its the last one they saw, especially when the call doesn’t look right thru their homer-colored lenses.
The play at the end of the A&M game didn’t look like a foul from the views they showed on TV. They only had two views that I saw and I watched both in slow-mo cause in real time at game speed I couldn’t tell and I wanted to see if they got a gift. The replays I saw showed no contact down low on the body that could be called a foul and the block up top looked clean and the players reaction was that of someone who just got blocked clean up top, when you leave your feet and the ball gets hit up top going the opposite direction you’re going to be knocked off balance, there was no complaining for a call. Looks like the refs got it right. Besides there was more contact on the last layup by Collison for the go-ahead bucket for UCLA.
But I’m sure Aggie fans and UCLA haters see it differently.

Then you need your eyes checked. Look again at the link I provided on the A&M game:
http://vegaswatch.net/2008/03/this-is-not-foul-apparently.html
But I’m sure Aggie fans and UCLA haters see it differently.
Actually, people with a functioning set of eyeballs see it differently.
everyone just tends to focus on the last blown call because its the last one they saw
Good point.
especially when the call doesn’t look right thru their homer-colored lenses.
Project much?
Again, only weenies complain about refs.
Only weenies deny favorable calls from the refs. Only weenies cheer for teams that wear a sky blue color. Only weenies…well, I could continue, but I think you get the point.

Thanks for the link. Definately a foul. ANOTHER BLOWN CALL AT THE END OF A GAME WENT IN FAVOR OF UCLA.
Back to my point. AGAIN, in real time and slow-mo, from the views they showed on TV, (which were from behind the play so you couldn’t see the contact, IT LOOKED, as I prefaced each statement in my last post but some weenies take said statement as definitive) IT LOOKED like there was no foul. Obviously in hindsight, from the right position, with a still shot from a telephoto lens, we can see that there was definately a foul. The refs swallowed their whistles in the last few possessions, which often happens or don’t have a functioning set of eyeballs. When it occurred, unless you had a different feed, there was no way for any functioning set of eyeballs sitting in front of a TV to see this view and see the foul. It’s easy, with the benifit of replay or zoomed in stills, to see what can be difficult to see in real time at game speed. Again, Refs blow calls all game long, not just in the last possession.

No arguments here.
