Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

Poll: Obama plummets in PA

You folks know how I view polls with great skepticism.  But if this one is accurate, perhaps his now-20% deficit in a state that had been narrowing is due to rural Dem Pennsylvanians being perturbed that the Obamessiah looks down his nose at their culture?

Pass…the…popcorn!

Greenpeace founder actually gets it?

Someone check the forecast of Hell, pronto!  Patrick Moore, the founder of the treehugging moonbat organization Greenpeace, actually sees the benefit of nuclear power (though not in nuclear weapons, which is fair enough).  From Newsweek:

ZAKARIA: At Greenpeace, you fought against nuclear energy. What changed?
MOORE:
My belief, in retrospect, is that because we were so focused on the destructive aspect of nuclear technology and nuclear war, we made the mistake of lumping nuclear energy in with nuclear weapons, as if all things nuclear were evil. And indeed today, Greenpeace still uses the word “evil” to describe nuclear energy. I think that’s as big a mistake as if you lumped nuclear medicine in with nuclear weapons. Nuclear medicine uses radioactive isotopes to successfully treat millions of people every year, and those isotopes are all produced in nuclear reactors. That’s why I left Greenpeace: I could see that my fellow directors, none of whom had any science education, were starting to deal with issues around chemicals and biology and genetics, which they had no formal training in, and they were taking the organization into what I call “pop environmentalism,” which uses sensationalism, misinformation, fear tactics, etc., to deal with people on an emotional level rather than an intellectual level.

Moore goes on to mention the impending “nuclear renassiance”, where about a dozen nuke plants will apply for licenses this year after four last year.  Nuke plants would likely eventually replace coal-powered plants to generate power in this country…which would be tons cleaner to the environment (which I used to think environuts cared about).  You’d think that the treehuggers would be fond of that idea, but as Moore points out, they’re too busy “feeling” and not busy enough “thinking”!

An environmentalist who actually wants to look at science instead of choosing to live off of emotionally reflexive irrationality…there’s hope for environmentalists yet.

Government cracking down on criminal immigrants

Of course, it’s not our government…it’s Mexico’s!  From the AP:

Central Americans without documents now face increased security within Mexico, including checks on the train for stowaways. It’s also harder for them to head north once they cross into Mexico because of hurricane damage to the train tracks.

The result: The number of non-Mexican migrants stopped by the U.S. Border Patrol has dropped almost 60 percent from 2005, despite increased detention efforts. About 68,000 non-Mexican migrants — mostly Central Americans — were detained last year, compared to 165,000 in 2005. Non-Mexicans make up about 10 percent of all migrants caught by Border Patrol officers.

Mexico itself is also seeing fewer illegal immigrants — 120,000 were arrested last year, a 50 percent drop from 2005, when Hurricane Stan hit and destroyed the railroad, according to the National Immigration Institute. Since President Felipe Calderon took office two years ago, Mexico has added more soldiers and federal police on its border with Guatemala and more immigration and military checkpoints throughout the south.

Kudos to Calderon for taking national security and sovereignty seriously.  It’s good to see someone who recognizes the importance of those things.

What?  Wait, you mean this Calderon?

The Mexican government, he said, would continue to “energetically protest unilateral actions” of the U.S. Congress on the immigration front that he said “exacerbate the persecution of undocumented Mexicans in the U.S.”

Calderon, usted es un hipócrita!  (My online English-to-Spanish translator choked on deciphering “chutzpah”, so “hypocrite” had to do.)
