Junk science fad is starving 100 million more people

Alarmed by rising global food prices, some European leaders are rethinking their commitment to use ethanol fuel and are considering other policy changes to lower the costs of basic staples.

The use of corn and sugar to make ethanol is a main driver of rampant inflation in worldwide food costs during the past year. Grocery bills are up across Europe, and the United Nations World Food Program says that rising food prices have pushed 100 million people into hunger worldwide.

“A world food crisis … threatens to roll back progress made in recent years to lift millions of people out of poverty and, through increased inflation, affects us all,” Brown said before opening a summit here on the world food crisis.

Every fill of the tank with ethanol uses the same amount of corn a child would eat in a year, and let’s not even talk about the amount of potable water used to grow the corn in the first place. Given the above, which is the better use of the corn?

If we produce ethanol from waste — such as with switchgrass, which shows promise — then no ethical problem would exist, although certainly the efficiency issues would remain. Until then, we should end the push to turn food into fuel, driven by the global-climate-change hysteria and pandering to the agricultural sector. Feed people ahead of cars. Is that really such a difficult concept? 

Congrats, you global “warming” Chicken Littles.  You’ve succeeded in jacking our food and energy costs up, even to the point of forcing people into hunger.  You people officially suck.

    I’ll grant you that ethanol is a bad idea but enviormentalism (spelling sucks I know) is not in and of itself a bad concept. I consider myself an environmentalist and agree that Ethanol is a lousy alternative to fossil fuels but would you please quit calling people terrorists? Not all environmentalists are wacko’s any more than all religious people are wacko’s. Unfortunately the wacko’s get all the press coverage. :-/

    I would guess that you are probably not an environmentalist, but more of a conservationist. Getting maximum use of natural resources with minimum impact is laudible. Most “gun nuts” and “religious fundamentalists” would fall into the conservationist category – we pay for the DNR with our hunting licenses and God cammands we be good stewards of all He has given us.

    On the other hand, most feel-first, think-later-if-at-all libs that use the termenvironmentalist to define themselves tend to go overboard against any fossil fuel use, nuclear power use, or generally any machinery-powered life improvements. That’s what the hub-bub is all about.

    On point, uncontrolled procreation is causing the hunger problem, not use of ethanol. The hunger they so blithely refer to is primarily located in third world countries that are not converting grains to ethanol. So evidently, at least according to the environuts, the US and European countries that are attempting to find a way around the Arab and Socialist South American dictators control of fossil fuels is the cause of world hunger. Feh. Just another way to blame America first.

    Just for the record, I wasn’t calling the average recycling, conserving energy, Joe Average responsible citizen type folks terrorists. I’m talking about the wackos (like Algore) that are forcing the Gorbal Warming FARCE on the rest of us, making people pay for “carbon offsets”, saving the caribou while enslaving us to Islamofascists, insisting that we get rid of our SUV’s while they fly around in private jets type of “environmentalists”.
    In my opinion, this latter category of nutwad is holding the United States hostage and creating a whole host of threats that may well destroy the country. So as to those people, YES they ARE terrorists.

    Jon, they officially began sucking long before now. Lest we forget the groundbreaking Newsweek report from 1975 on Global Cooling…

    Anyone remember the 1980s environmental “crisis”? Our ozone layer has a hole! Oh no! There’s a big hole in our atmosphere! Whatever happened to that? Last I remember, “the deniers” wanted a wee bit of science behind the theory of ozone depletion. I don’t recall ever hearing about how that theory ever became fact.

    Scientific theories make great headlines. Disproving them barely makes it forward of the Style Section.

  6. I am shocked at news that people are rioting throughout the world because hunger is growing among populations at an alarming rate. I discuss this tonight at peoplepowergranny.blogspot.com, and give you a chance to vote in my poll regarding what we satisfied people should do to change this travesty. What would you suggest we could do to save children from starving to death this year?
