Australia getting the hang of this “capitalism” thingy
Check out the Aussies, will ya? They’re getting the crazy idea that lowering taxes will create a financial incentive that will ultimately increase their revenues! What’s next, an understanding of how supply and demand works? From Oz:
Australia will reduce the amount of tax overseas investors pay on dividends from managed funds to 7.5 percent to encourage investments in real estate trusts.
The tax, currently 30 percent, will be cut to 22.5 percent in the year starting July 1; 15 percent the following year; and 7.5 percent the year after that, Treasurer Wayne Swan said in his first budget in Canberra today.
“These arrangements will make Australia’s withholding tax rate one of the most competitive in the world,” Swan said. “The arrangements will ensure Australian property trusts are well placed to attract foreign investment.”
Australian money managers oversee more than A$1.4 trillion ($1.3 trillion) in assets, and that is forecast to exceed A$2.5 trillion by 2015, Swan said. Foreign investors account for only 3 percent of fee income, he said.
We could do something like that here in America that will attract foreign investors by the boatloads. It’s called the FairTax.
Ron Paul has no love for Myanmar victims
I’m stunned that Capt. Crazy hasn’t yet tied the Myanman cyclone with the war in Iraq, considering that the loon does that with every other topic. From the LA Times:
This week when a Congressional resolution came up for a vote merely offering “condolences and sympathy” to the people of Myanmar affected by the recent deadly cyclone, Ron Paul, the doting grandfather, the millionaire, was the only member of the entire House of Representatives to vote “No.”
The Myanmar resolution, like all those goofy pieces of symbolic legislation, would…
… have done absolutely nothing for the stricken millions. Not even provided one paper towel. It’s a cheap publicity trick that elected legislators waste countless hours on each session.
Such worthless resolutions don’t even get much publicity anymore. And, to put it in blunt political terms, exactly how strong is the Myanmarese vote around here anyway?
So Paul’s symbolic stand against symbolic silliness looks good.
Look, maybe Dr. Doofus feels like I do about resolutions, that they’re nothing more than political gimmicks that accomplish nothing and waste time. If so, this was a vote on principle, and he should be commended for not voting on something as silly as an empty resolution.
Or not:
Come to find out that Paul has voted in favor of similar empty resolutions to congratulate the University of Kansas football team for a swell season and winning the 2008 FedEx Orange Bowl, to laud the Louisiana State football team for, golly, winning the 2007 Bowl Championship Series and to celebrate the New York Giants for their come-from-behind victory in Super Bowl XLII.
Got that? Myanmar’s cyclone victims can go to hell, but can we give it up for the Kansas, LSU, and NY Giants football teams?
Schmuck.
Kerry lies to defend Obama’s lie
Jean-Francois Heinz-Kerry (who is rumored to have served in Vietnam) took to the airwaves yesterday to defend Obama from charges that Bush never made about Obama, specifically that Obama wants to meet with terrorist regimes like Iran. From the Weekly Standard:
On MSNBC a few minutes ago, Senator John Kerry was on, furiously trying to explain Barack Obama’s increasingly tortuous position on Iran. (Kerry as Obama’s foreign policy proxy? You know where this is going…)
Senator Kerry attempted to claim that Obama doesn’t necessarily want direct, presidential-level diplomacy with Iran. Rather, he explained, “That’s why you have a Secretary of State, that’s why you have ambassadors.”
Well, that settles it! If a man who has an imaginary event like Christmas in Cambodia “seared, seared” into his memory says that the Obamessiah never said he’d meet with Iran without preconditions, then I should certainly believe that man over my own lying eyes and ears.

It depends on the meaning of the words “direct” and “without preconditions”!
