McCain: Exactly how would Bubba know about a POW’s mental state?
Disgraced former president Bill Clinton has picked up the theme on “Hey, let’s attack McCain’s military service as an effective campaign technique”. Bubba theorized at a campaign stop that former POW’s are mentally unstable. McCain, though, illustrated that he has a sense of humor and a biting wit. Quips J-Mac:
I don’t know where he gets his expertise.
Zing! The video clip (in its context) is available here. Notes Ed:
He delivers what may be the classic rebuttal of his career, exposing Clinton’s lack of standing to even comment on such an issue.
Indeed.

I don’t know where he gets his expertise.
Bill probably has a PhD in mental instability and hairtrigger anger.

Not to be like one of those leftist conspiracy theorists who see all of the world’s faults are due to Bush, but there are too many Dem talking heads brining up McCain’s POW and Military Record to be just a coincidence.
Comment by Steve | July 8, 2008
Steve, I think it’s because the left hates the military so much, they think that some normal Americans may share their loathing.
Comment by crushliberalism | July 8, 2008
Leonard Pitts (a columnist for the Miami Herald) wrote an interesting column about his fellow lefties bashing those with military service. Check it out:
http://www.kansas.com/205/story/456149.html
“Maybe I am hypersensitive, maybe just old-fashioned by the standards of an era that regards earnestness as a character flaw. Still, it strikes me as viscerally wrong, offensive at the mitochondrial level, to trivialize, demean or diminish, particularly for political gain, a man’s service and sacrifice on behalf of his country.”
I don’t agree with him much, but he does hit the nail on the head sometimes!

WMD – that would make Bill a POH.
Comment by Kanaka Girl | July 9, 2008
Steve I think the left is just starting to hit McCain on his service record because they know that BHO cannot compete in this arena so they have to reduce, diminish, or destroy McCain’s advantage in the Commander-in-Chief experience and qualifications. It’s been effective before with Bubba beating a partially paralyzed war hero (Dole) when Clinton was a draft dodging, dope smoking, womanizer and the media got him elected!
Comment by tnjack | July 9, 2008
I’ll save the full history lesson, but if you go back through every Presidential election, you will see a similarity in the victors: when a war hero runs for the office, he wins. The left seems to think that since The Republican Dirty Tricks Machine™ was able to remove the “hero” aspect from Kerry’s record in the last election, why not try it themselves in this one. As Doug Ross aptly notes, while Kerry was “Swiftboated” in the last election, democrats are attempting to “Mythboat” McCain in this one. Denigrating McCain’s war record is beyond reproach. Yet, I’m still surprised Dan Rather hasn’t come running out of his Batcave with documents proving McCain wasn’t really in that POW camp after all. Sure, the document is totally bogus, but the story is still true. Wow – whaddya know: looks like this little trick from the dems isn’t so terribly new after all.
Ultimately, these attacks on McCain aren’t going over well with anyone except the radical left (perhaps those 9 out of 100 people who are still giving Congress a thumbs-up?) and McCain has a golden opportunity to point out to everyone that an example of Obama’s leadership qualities exists in Chicago, and ought to be scrutinized. Since the media is more than happy and willing to overlook this, it is squarely up to McCain to put and keep it under the spotlight.
Comment by TheBad | July 9, 2008
tnjack, you are right they are playing Clinton’s playbook on Dole.
However, McCain is just a better and more dynamic candidate than Dole ever was.
Bad,
“Ultimately, these attacks on McCain aren’t going over well with anyone except the radical left”
Then why do it? I saw another Dem talking head this morning on Fox and Friends saying McCain was unstable and attacked a 90 year old Strom Thurman. I never heard about that before, and I’m a pretty informed person but considering the source, I take it with a grain of salt. IMHO, I think they are trying to put the idea in the back of people’s minds that maybe he’s not stable, maybe he’s mentally ill. And as Dem’s always do, it’s not McCain’s fault, he’s was a POW you know…

Steve, if that’s the litmus test for instability, McCain is in good company. I have the urge to slap a member of Congress nearly every day!
Comment by Kanaka Girl | July 10, 2008
Good one KG!!!!
I still think you should run for Congress.
