Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

UPDATED: Obama: Americans should learn Spanish, French, and God knows what other language

Update(s) at the bottom, post bumped to the top.

I don’t think many folks would argue that learning to speak a foreign language isn’t a bad idea.  I took French in high school and college, though I may never visit France (or any other French-speaking nation).  Others I knew took Spanish.  No big whoop.

But that elitist prick from IL weighed in with this piece of snobbery:

It’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is merci beaucoup.

Well, Mon Dieu!  Or, in English, “WTF??”

I mean, he’s saying that it’s OK for Europeans who speak languages other than English come to our country and speak in their native tongue without learning our language, but if we go to Europe and speak in our native tongue, then it’s “embarrassing”?

Let’s take a further look here, shall we?

Earlier in the same speech, he also said that instead of immigrants (illegal or not) learning our language, we should learn theirs…particularly Spanish.  First Spanish, then French…why stop there?  Maybe we should teach our kids Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi…ad nauseum.  That ought to put them in the graduating class of 2030, eh?

Also, why is it that the Obamaliar expects us to speak the language of immigrants who move here to live, but also expects us to speak the language whenever we temporarily visit another country?  Geez, dude, pick a sentiment and stick with it!  Actually, he has picked a sentiment: abandon English, kowtow to the Euros, and destroy American identity.

But hey, maybe he was just “inartfully” expressing his thoughts, rather than giving us yet additional insight into how bad he really detests this country.

Look, if I moved to a country where my language was not the predominant language, I guarantee you that I would not expect to “Press 1 for English”!  I would learn the predominantly spoken language so that I could function and thrive there.  But I’m kinda funny normal that way.

UPDATE (07/09/2008 – 07:30 PM EST): Hat tip to The Bad for bringing this to my attention.  It seems as though Snobama was lecturing Americans to learn a language (Spanish) that he doesn’t even speak himself!  I wonder if he can speak French beyond that “merci beaucoup”?  I’ve gone ahead and added the “hypocrisy” tag to this post.

Pelosi: Congress is responsible for high gas prices…only if GOP controls Congress

Michelle Malkin has a great post reminding people of San Fran Nan’s words when campaigning against the then-GOP controlled Congress:

With skyrocketing gas prices, it is clear that the American people can no longer afford the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress and its failure to stand up to Republican big oil and gas company cronies. Americans this week are paying $2.91 a gallon on average for regular gasoline – 33 cents higher than last month, and double the price than when President Bush first came to office.

“With record gas prices, record CEO pay packages, and record oil company profits, Speaker Hastert and the Majority Congress continue to give the American people empty rhetoric rather than join Democrats who are working to lower gas prices now.

How’s that working out for us?

Michelle also has a chart up that shows the fluctuation of gas prices since 2005, broken down by a Republican Congress and the current Democrat Congress.  If you don’t feel like looking at the chart, here’s the condensed version:

Gas prices when Bush took office under a GOP-controlled Congress in January 2001: $1.49

Gas prices when Dems took control of Congress in January 2007:  $2.10

Percent increase from Jan. 2001 to Jan. 2007:  41%

Gas prices today (July 2008):  $4.11

Percent increase from Jan. 2007 to today (July 2008):  95%

In other words, it’s taken the Dems only 18 months to do what Bush and the GOP couldn’t do in six years: nearly double the price of gas!  But in Fantasy World, the 41% gas price increase under Bush and Friends counts, but the 95% gas price increase under the Dems doesn’t count.  Got that?

Look, I’m not blaming Pe-loco for the high gas prices…because in essence, whether she knows it or not, she’s blaming herself!  But what I am saying is that if she’s going to blame Congressional Republicans for the high prices under their watch, then she is going to have to take ownership of the high prices under her watch.

Black TV station to cover Dem convention, but not GOP convention

From The Live Feed:

Given Barack Obama’s historic run for the Oval Office, African American-themed cable network TV One plans to break from its usual entertainment programming to provide extensive coverage of the Democratic National Convention in August.

“Sen. Barack Obama running for president is a huge deal for TV One as it is for the African American community,” said Johnathan Rodgers, president and CEO of TV One, a channel in about 40 million homes. “African Americans have fallen in love with his candidacy, his family  … we will be covering the democratic convention all the time.”

But John McCain shouldn’t expect the same treatment. The network doesn’t plan any coverage of the Republican Convention.

“We are not a news organization,” said Rodgers, speaking at the opening session of the semi-annual Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills. “We are a television network designed to celebrate African American achievement. If Hillary was the nominee, we would not be covering this year’s Democratic Convention.”

“My audience is 93% black,” Rodgers added. “I serve my audience.”

As a cable network, TV One is likely exempt from any equal time access rules. Federal Communications Commission rules state that broadcast networks are required to give equal time to presidential candidates.

While I find this kind of one-sidedness to be a shame, I actually don’t have a problem with TV One’s decision to do this.  After all, it’s a cable TV show that’s not even a news show, and thus it can broadcast whatever programming it chooses to do.  Which brings me to my exit question:

Do all you idiots who clamor for a reinstiution of the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” understand that if you get you way, TV One would have to give equal time to the GOP convention, even though the bulk of their viewers wouldn’t watch it (and thus diminish advertising revenue)?

Exit question #2, via the first comment at the TLF site: “Does that mean channels who have predominantly white audiences don’t have to cover Obama?”
