Black TV station to cover Dem convention, but not GOP convention
From The Live Feed:
Given Barack Obama’s historic run for the Oval Office, African American-themed cable network TV One plans to break from its usual entertainment programming to provide extensive coverage of the Democratic National Convention in August.
“Sen. Barack Obama running for president is a huge deal for TV One as it is for the African American community,” said Johnathan Rodgers, president and CEO of TV One, a channel in about 40 million homes. “African Americans have fallen in love with his candidacy, his family … we will be covering the democratic convention all the time.”
But John McCain shouldn’t expect the same treatment. The network doesn’t plan any coverage of the Republican Convention.
“We are not a news organization,” said Rodgers, speaking at the opening session of the semi-annual Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills. “We are a television network designed to celebrate African American achievement. If Hillary was the nominee, we would not be covering this year’s Democratic Convention.”
“My audience is 93% black,” Rodgers added. “I serve my audience.”
…
As a cable network, TV One is likely exempt from any equal time access rules. Federal Communications Commission rules state that broadcast networks are required to give equal time to presidential candidates.
While I find this kind of one-sidedness to be a shame, I actually don’t have a problem with TV One’s decision to do this. After all, it’s a cable TV show that’s not even a news show, and thus it can broadcast whatever programming it chooses to do. Which brings me to my exit question:
Do all you idiots who clamor for a reinstiution of the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” understand that if you get you way, TV One would have to give equal time to the GOP convention, even though the bulk of their viewers wouldn’t watch it (and thus diminish advertising revenue)?
Exit question #2, via the first comment at the TLF site: “Does that mean channels who have predominantly white audiences don’t have to cover Obama?”

Crush, I would like to see an actual “Fairness Doctrine” REALLY implemented for a 1 week run if there was some way to enforce it in ALL media outlets. Seriously, can you imagine the apoplectic response of Chris Matthews having to say equal amounts of a) good things about G.W. and bad things about Bubba or the Dali Bama to what he normally says? How about the reverse for Ann Coulter or Mike Gallagher?
But reality sets in and my happy dreams are crushed with the knowledge that “Fairness” to the left is something similar to “truth,” only applicable for imposition on the right… And for that reason, “NO, NO, A thousand times NO!” do I ever want that piece of crap legislation resurrected.
As to Exit Question 2 – It would for KKK TV or some similar politically incorrect broadcasting experiment in ‘entertainment television for whites” that would be short-lived due to leftard angst anyways. After all, racism is also something that only applies to whites according to the left. (I was going to say the majority, but it’s still called racism in South Africa when it’s done by the non-majority whites, and isn’t when done by the majority blacks according to the msm…)

“Does that mean channels who have predominantly white audiences don’t have to cover Obama?”
Good question. In a “fair” world, the answer would be yes. But then we’d have to deal with Jesse and Al out there marching in the streets and trying to extort money from whatever network had the courage to do it. Can you imagine the uproar if Fox refused to cover Hussein? OMG!
I think TV One’s decision has more to do with fear that their viewers might actually get educated.

In a “fair” world, entertainment wouldn’t be geared towards the color of one’s skin.

If Ballsack get elected get used to your TV programs looking more like BET than anything else. There will probably be a big market for Ebonics as a second language classes.

I wonder how TV One would have handled the mic when Jesse threatened to cut Obama’s n*ts off?

Just like the other news outlets….they’d ignore it. Reverend Al was on TV all night trying to defend Jesse’s threat to de-gibletize the Obamessiah. It was kind of funny. Well, I doubt Don Imus thought so.

I think most people responding here do not know the history behind “Black” networks not covering the conventions. Up to this point, they have been methodically and systematically kept out of the running for a position to cover such events. This year, however, a few individuals decided to make a point of seeking spots for such networks, not only for its historical significance, but because it is more than time.

I understand perfectly that if those idots bring back the so called Fairness Doctrine that the stations will have to give equal time to opponents. But do the nitwits understand that I can change the channel or turn it off and on when their showing someone or something I want to hear and see or don’t want to hear or see!
