Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

Pelosi: Congress is responsible for high gas prices…only if GOP controls Congress

Michelle Malkin has a great post reminding people of San Fran Nan’s words when campaigning against the then-GOP controlled Congress:

With skyrocketing gas prices, it is clear that the American people can no longer afford the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress and its failure to stand up to Republican big oil and gas company cronies. Americans this week are paying $2.91 a gallon on average for regular gasoline – 33 cents higher than last month, and double the price than when President Bush first came to office.

“With record gas prices, record CEO pay packages, and record oil company profits, Speaker Hastert and the Majority Congress continue to give the American people empty rhetoric rather than join Democrats who are working to lower gas prices now.

How’s that working out for us?

Michelle also has a chart up that shows the fluctuation of gas prices since 2005, broken down by a Republican Congress and the current Democrat Congress.  If you don’t feel like looking at the chart, here’s the condensed version:

Gas prices when Bush took office under a GOP-controlled Congress in January 2001: $1.49

Gas prices when Dems took control of Congress in January 2007:  $2.10

Percent increase from Jan. 2001 to Jan. 2007:  41%

Gas prices today (July 2008):  $4.11

Percent increase from Jan. 2007 to today (July 2008):  95%

In other words, it’s taken the Dems only 18 months to do what Bush and the GOP couldn’t do in six years: nearly double the price of gas!  But in Fantasy World, the 41% gas price increase under Bush and Friends counts, but the 95% gas price increase under the Dems doesn’t count.  Got that?

Look, I’m not blaming Pe-loco for the high gas prices…because in essence, whether she knows it or not, she’s blaming herself!  But what I am saying is that if she’s going to blame Congressional Republicans for the high prices under their watch, then she is going to have to take ownership of the high prices under her watch.

If the Democrats are working to lower gas prices, I’m a flying unicorn!

Pelosi and the Democrats are doing what they do best…OBSTRUCTING every possible energy solution while pointing fingers at the Republicans and George Bush.

  2. Gauntlet down:

“rather than join democrats who are working to lower gas prices now.”

I challenge anyone to name one thing democrats did or even tried to do that qualifies as “working to lower gas prices”. One thing.

“she is going to have to take ownership of the high prices”

Oh, I’m sure she will – remember that it was Pelosi who promised “to lead the most honest, the most open and the most ethical Congress in history”. As such, it would only be ethical for her to take said ownership. Yet, I still feel as though holding my breath for this would be detrimental to my health.

  4. Now you know Dem’s can’t be held to the same standard. Dem’s feel bad about high gas prices and that worth more in the Dem’s mind than actally doing something.

  5. Political Rule # 1. Democrats are always right.

Political Rule # 2. If you think a Democrat is wrong, refer to PR # 1!

Given those rules, just how can we expect Nancy-and-company to accept blame (for anything)?

  7. Thank you, Jonathan. I guess you owe an infirmity called leg cramps – I cannot stay in a bed for very long before I am literally launched out of it. That and our 27-month house building project is nearing completion – we close on a mortgage the 17th. I hope to return with greater frequency once the ‘move’ is complete.

BTW, I still love your posts, so keep up the great work!

    “AMERICA IS ADDICTED TO OIL”

    So tonight,
I announce The Advanced Energy Initiative

We must change how we power our automobiles.
We will also fund additional research in cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol, and move beyond a petroleum-based economy and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past.

The best way to break this addiction is through technology. Since 2001, we have spent nearly 10 billion dollars to develop cleaner, cheaper, more reliable alternative energy sources, and we are on the threshold of incredible advances, a 22-percent increase in clean-energy research at the Department of Energy, to push for breakthroughs in two vital areas. To change how we power our homes and offices, we will invest more in zero-emission coal-fired plants; revolutionary solar and wind technologies; and clean, safe nuclear energy. We must also change how we power our automobiles. We will increase our research in better batteries for hybrid and electric cars, and in pollution-free cars that run on hydrogen. We will also fund additional research in cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol, not just from corn but from wood chips, stalks, or switch grass. Our goal is to make this new kind of ethanol practical and competitive within six years. Breakthroughs on this and other new technologies will help us reach another great goal: to replace more than 75 percent of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025. By applying the talent and technology of America, this country can dramatically improve our environment … move beyond a petroleum-based economy … and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past.
