Are there any polls out from the states that will actually have the offshore drilling? CA, FL, VA, SC, etc? I’d be curious to see if those numbers match up with national poll numbers about it. I am sure the residents of Florida don’t want the nonaffected states dictating their policies.
I am not even asking this to fight about it, I just am really curious because I haven’t seen those numbers, not even here in VA.

Jen, that is a fair question. I haven’t seen any polls in my local fishwrap here in Jacksonville, but when I get time, I’ll see if I can google any.
Polls of Alaskans over the years have shown an overwhelming majority of them support drilling in Alaskan waters and in ANWR, but the left has never cared to listen to them. Their attitude has been “Well, just what do those Alaskans know about Alaska anyway?”
BTW, Juanny Mac has explicitly expressed your sentiments that states should decide. For example, FL Gov. Crist supports offshore drilling, but the Governator in CA opposes it.

Bush’s recending the order is a step in the right direction however it is almost a moot point. CA is the only state affected with measureable reserves in the zone affected ONLY by the presidential order. And I would bet that CA will NOT open those areas (better to see nothing 10 miles out that barely see an oil platform). The rest of the states best reserves are located in the shelf area covered by the congressional concerns.

I would think the polls would be right down party lines, although it seems more and more people are for drilling than against it.
The Conservatives here in Florida have been calling for drilling for some time, and some Democrats are starting to get on board as well. Especially since we have Cuba and China drilling off our coast.
I have friends in Alaska and California who support drilling in their states as well.
But my guess is the henny penny Gorbal Warming liberals are going to fight it no matter what.

Pelosi was quick to make a statement on this, and it was as predictable as it was wrong.
“Once again, the oilman in the White House is echoing the demands of Big Oil”
This, as if there is no problem with the price of gas at all. Just that mean old oilman in the White Hosue.
“The Bush plan is a hoax. It will neither reduce gas prices nor increase energy independence. It just gives millions more acres to the same companies that are sitting on nearly 68 million acres of public lands and coastal areas.”
This, as if there are giant caches of oil that free market companies don’t want to go and get during a supply shortage. It boggles the mind! And, as to her notion of opening drilling in known caches of oil not bringing down prices (which is patently incorrect), I’m still waiting to hear her idea on how to do that.
“If the President wants to bring down prices in the next two weeks, not the next two decades, he should free our oil by releasing a small portion of the more than 700 million barrels of oil we have put in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.”
Use our strategic reserve instead of drilling for more where we know damn well where it is? Yeah, that makes sense.
“It’s time to tell the oil industry: ‘You already have millions of acres to drill. Use it or lose it.’”
It’s time to tell Nancy and her cohorts: ‘You’re fired!’ Make no mistake – democrats will not allow drilling. If they did, it would improve the situation and they can’t have improvement at the hands of Republicans. They’re still free-falling from their failure to fail in Iraq!

OK, jen, I found it. Thanks for inspiring me to look: :-p
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/florida/election_2008_florida_presidential_election
“Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Florida voters favor offshore drilling while 32% are opposed. Eighty-three percent (83%) of Republicans favor offshore drilling and unaffiliated voters favor it by a 54% to 34% margin. Democrats are more evenly divided—38% favor drilling while 50% are opposed.”
If CA wants to oppose it, I have no problems with that. FL will gladly welcome the drills here.

Kanaka Girl – China is NOT drilling off the coast, that has been debunked and some (not all) of the Republicans who were perpetuating that wrong statement have retracted it. Even your Republican senator has come out against that lie.

Thanks for looking up polls Jon.

Jen,
Nice try, but the article seems to be somewhat of a he said/she said with regard to who’s drilling down there.
Regardless…the point is…there IS oil available — and we need to stop screwing around and go get it.
Oh and by the way…. Mel Martinez is a RINO. We got a pig in a poke and he’ll be a one term senator.
Comment by Kanaka Girl | July 15, 2008
Ok, as opposed to what? Where is your proof that they are drilling there?
Comment by jen | July 15, 2008
Jen – you’re missing the POINT (as usual). The Cubans hold the oil leases off the coast of Florida and are allowing other countries to drill for oil that should be rightfully ours. Whether it’s China, Cuba, France or any other country doing the drilling is irrelevant — the fact remains that WE are NOT drilling – thanks to our idiot politicians — and that is a shame!
Comment by Kanaka Girl | July 15, 2008
KG’s right. I read jen’s referenced (mcclatchy) article too and it went on to say that those countries are “exploring” for oil off the Cuba coast not drilling. But wait, how do you explore……drill? So I think I’d like to see my country explore for oil there also.
I have heard the dems say that drilling , anywhere, won’t do anything to drop the price of oil because it could take up to 7 years to get that into my tank. Well I just have to say that if we’d made that decision 7 years ago then we wouldn’t be having this discussion today. And if we don’t start today then we can wait 7 more years and play this again.
Politicians can speculate as to whether this could work or not but my 2 cents worth say that if we start using our own resources then the foreign countries will drop the price of their crude. Let’s at least TRY!

“I have heard the dems say that drilling , anywhere, won’t do anything to drop the price of oil”
Yes, we’ve all heard that – for more than a decade. The democrats were just as wrong about it then as they are now. As noted by National Review Online, Bush’s removal of the executive-branch moratorium on offshore drilling brought about an immediate drop in the price of oil. This comes as no surprise to many of us. We’ve been saying it for a while now.
Now comes the real challenge: pressure democrats to stop blocking this effort and let’s begin actually drilling.
Comment by TheBad | July 15, 2008
Kanaka, the point was you said China was drilling yet can’t back it up. as usual.
Comment by jen | July 16, 2008
Jen, you can mince words all you want, but the fact remains that FOREIGN COUNTRIES ARE drilling off our coast. And for every article you send that says China isn’t drilling, I can send you 20 that say they are. As a matter of fact, there was another report just this morning that Russia is now drilling off the coast of Florida under Cuba’s oil lease and CHINA has contracts in the works. So get off your little high horse and get the point. AMERICA needs to be drilling – not Cuba, Russia, China or any other foreigner.

Folks, I blogged about this a couple of days ago, but I need to remind everyone that sitting here and tossing comments back and forth in agreement doesn’t do very much.
We need to contact our representatives. We need to light up the switchboard at the Congressional building the way people did when the Amnesty bill was being discussed. We need to flat out THREATEN our lawmakers: You either get off your collective asses and start opening up land to drill or we as voters WILL remember your ineptitude during the next elections.
I’m not here to advertise my blog, BUT, at the end of my post from the 14th is a letter I’ve sent out to 51 members of the House and Senate so far. There’s also a link to a site where you can get contact information for your reps. If you really want to get those dingbats in office to do get their finger out, please consider cutting and pasting that letter into an email or a Word document and sending it to your reps. I’ve done most of the work for you.
They need to know that the public expects them to act, and that if they do not they will be unemployed after the next election.

Angry D – We HAVE been contacting our reps….problem is, they’re not listening. I call or write mine every day, and all I keep getting is the same liberal B.S. “Drilling won’t solve the problem”…”the oil companies aren’t using the leases they already have”…”we’re protecting the environment”….blah blah blah. It’s all falling on deaf ears.
