Obama: The Russians invading Georgia is because the US is an aggressive bully
Heck, the Russkies are just learning from us…so sayeth the Obamessiah:
Democrat Barack Obama scolded Russia again on Wednesday for invading another country’s sovereign territory while adding a new twist: the United States, he said, should set a better example on that front, too.
The Illinois senator’s opposition to the Iraq war, which his comment clearly referenced, is well known. But this was the first time the Democratic presidential candidate has made a comparison between the U.S. invasion of Iraq and Russia’s recent military activity in Georgia.
“We’ve got to send a clear message to Russia and unify our allies,” Obama told a crowd of supporters in Virginia. “They can’t charge into other countries. Of course it helps if we are leading by example on that point.”
Before Chris Matthews pops a woody over that line, how’s about we read Allah’s retort?
Here’s a newsflash, champ: Russia’s foreign minister did indeed invoke a case of U.S. military action in his Journal op-ed the other day, but it wasn’t Bush and the Middle East that he had in mind. I don’t begrudge the guy his leftist cant, but at least put some meat on the bone. How, precisely, would Russian actions have been different if we hadn’t invaded Iraq? Georgia and Ossetia have been fighting since Obama was in his 20s. Are we playing another game of Time Machine here, in which the war somehow becomes a justification even for misfortunes that preceded it?
“Hope” and “change” and “judgment” and stuff.
Obama: My country is very stingy and uncharitable
But hey, don’t you go thinking that the Euro-kowtowing, arugula-eating, Hawaiian bodysurfer is an anti-American elitist or anything, m’kay? From the DC Examiner:
Barack Obama, in a discussion with evangelist Rick Warren about his Christian faith, said he had been guilty of a “fundamental selfishness” that had contributed to regrettable youthful behavior.
Then he confessed for the rest of us.
“Americans’ greatest moral failure in my lifetime,” he said, “has been that we still don’t abide by that basic precept in Matthew that whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.”
Really? Americans aren’t very charitable?
Sorry, but he can hang that one up. Whatever the case is with his own selfishness, the evidence of an internationally superior American generosity is impressive, beginning with the numbers on our charitable giving. We give twice as much as the British per capita, and according to The American magazine, seven times as much as the Germans and 14 times as much as the Italians.
Even in inflation-adjusted dollars, the amount given each year just keeps getting larger, and meanwhile, we do far more volunteer work than in other industrialized countries.
If only we conservatives could be as generous as liberals, then…well, we’d have more money in our pockets.
Of course, Obama isn’t just talking about private giving, and could face serious embarrassment if he were. As has been reported about a study by Arthur Brooks of Syracuse University, conservatives give almost a third more money to charities than liberals, who mostly have more to give.
Read the rest of the column. It’s great!
As Instapundit notes on two points:
UPDATE: Speaking of selfishness, perhaps the millionaire Obama could do something for his long lost brother living in poverty in Kenya: “Mr Obama, 26, the youngest of the presidential candidate’s half-brothers, spoke for the first time about his life, which could not be more different than that of the Democratic contender. ‘No-one knows who I am,’ he told the magazine, before claiming: ‘I live here on less than a dollar a month.’ . . . He has only met his famous older brother twice – once when he was just five and the last time in 2006 when Senator Obama was on a tour of East Africa and visited Nairobi. . . . Of their second meeting, George Obama said: ‘It was very brief, we spoke for just a few minutes. It was like meeting a complete stranger.’”
ANOTHER UPDATE: More Obama/Kenya background. “Obama to School Named After Him – Drop Dead.”
“Stingy are thee, but not me!” The Obamessiah’s message is clear: We should take care of our brothers…so long as they’re not our real brothers!
Liberals lie about McCain’s support for a draft
From Marc Ambinder:
Liberals are having a conniption over Sen. John McCain’s purported endorsement of a draft today.
In Las Crucas, New Mexico, a woman asked McCain about the “horrible conditions” that veterans often see when return from combat. Here’s the last few sentences:
My son is an officer in the Air Force, I’m a vet., and I was raised in a military family. And I think it’s a sorry state of affairs. When we have illegal aliens; having a medic-aid card that can access specialists, top physicians, the best of medical, and our vets can’t even get to a doctor. And these are the people that we tied yellow ribbons for and Bush patted on the back. If we don’t re-enact the draft, I don’t think we’ll have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of Hell.
His critics focus on the first sentence:
SEN JOHN MCCAIN: Ma’am let me say that I don’t disagree with anything you have said, and thank you.
So he agrees that unless there’s a draft, the war on terror can’t be won?
Not exactly. I’ve heard McCain tell numerous audiences that he opposes a new draft. As the context makes clear, McCain is focusing on the meat of the question and not the woman’s exclamation at the end. Unless you think McCain privately favors the draft and let the cat out of the bag, you’re going to have reach to conclude that he’s radically changed his mind here. …
The video clip is here, so you can make up your own mind.
Besides, what is the left getting their Birkenstocks in a bunch for? One of their own, Charlie “Rent Control” Rangel is the guy who tried to bring back the draft. Of all the bellyaching the left does about the right trying to reinstitute a draft, it seems they would be quite vocal about their own moonbat leaders who try to do it.
Obama’s “rich” hypocrisy
Barry O: Hey, McCain is a rich snob with too many houses, so he’s an elitist.
McCain campaign retort:
Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people “cling” to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?
Zing!
