Another Dem talking point destroyed: Bush McCain
Excellent piece by Dick Morris:
That’s what the Democratic convention has been doing in Denver. They are so anxious to run against Bush, their animosity is so pent up, that they persist in running against a man who is not seeking a third term. In speech after speech, the Democrats knock the Bush record and then add, lamely, that GOP candidate Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) is the same as Bush. Or they call the McCain candidacy Bush’s third term. It was no accident — or Freudian slip — when vice presidential nominee Sen. Joseph Biden (Del.) spoke of John Bush instead of George in his litany of attacks.
…
The truth is, of course, that McCain is the most unlike Bush of any of the Republican senators. (When Obama’s people claim that Bush and McCain voted the same 94 percent of the time, they forget that most of the votes in the Senate are unanimous.) The fact that McCain backs commending a basketball team on its victory doesn’t mean that he is in lockstep ideologically with the president. The issues on which McCain and Bush differ are legion:
• McCain fought for campaign finance reform — McCain-Feingold — that Bush fought and ultimately signed because he had no choice.
• McCain led the battle to restrict interrogation techniques of terror suspects and to ban torture.
• McCain went with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) on a tough measure to curb climate change, something Bush denies is going on.
• McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts when they passed.
• McCain urged the Iraq surge, a posture Bush rejected for years before conceding its wisdom.
• McCain favors FDA regulation of tobacco and sponsored legislation to that effect, a position all but a handful of Republican Senators oppose.
• McCain’s energy bill, also with Lieberman, is a virtual blueprint for energy independence and development of alternate sources.
• After the Enron scandal, McCain introduced sweeping reforms in corporate governance and legislation to guarantee pensions and prohibit golden parachutes for executives. Bush opposed McCain’s changes and the watered-down Sarbanes-Oxley bill eventuated.
• McCain has been harshly critical of congressional overspending, particularly of budgetary earmarks, a position Bush only lately adopted (after the Democrats took over Congress).
So much for that “McSame” meme.

um, you do realize mccain has changed his positions of a lot of these differences, don’t you? tax cuts, torture, cap and trade and being critical of spending, but being in congress for more than 20 years and voting for all of the spending bills isn’t impressive. plus, even if you cut out all the earmarks, we are still spending a ton in iraq and even more ridiculous is all the wasted money we are throwing at contractors in iraq – money that is either being lost, or we are being overcharged or paying for projects that aren’t getting done or getting done badly (poop raining from ceiliings?)
dick morris is pretty much anti-dem which is why they trot him out on fox news all the time as a ‘democrat’ to be fair and balanced.
last night was awesome, i really can’t see how the republicans can even halfway match that kind of enthusiasm and eagerness to put boots on the ground and get out the vote.

“poop raining from ceiliings”
What’s DC’s school system have to do with this discussion?
dick morris is pretty much anti-dem which is why they trot him out on fox news all the time as a ‘democrat’ to be fair and balanced.
Which is nothing like the MSM trotting out Lincoln Chaffee over the last several years (when he was stilla RINO), or Chuck Hagel, to give the “Republican” point of view. Nah, nothing like that.
last night was awesome
Yes, but you are an emotion-driven Obama groupie. Sure, it was awesome. If, by “awesome”, you mean a well-rehearsed speech with no specifics and a bunch of vague platitudes, lies, and generalities, then yeah…”awesome”! But hey, that “clean, articulate” infanticidal pal of domestic terrorists sure does look good on stage, doesn’t he?
Dick Morris obliterated your mindless meme. Sorry ’bout that. Go find another one. I’m sure the moonbatosphere has plenty of them from which you may choose.

no he didn’t because mccain has changed his positions on almost ALL of those points. nice try. sure, palin is hot, but 0 experience, believes in creationism, staunchly pro-life and anti-gay and pro-opening ANWR – doubt she will win over many hillary voters.

no he didn’t
Whatever you say, Madam Ostrich. Did Team O text message your talking points to you today? Original thoughts and ideas are in short supply coming from you these days, since all I hear are regurgitated Deaniac notes.
sure, palin is hot, but 0 experience
Oh, so NOW experience matters? No wonder you’re an Obamaniac…flip-flop, flip-flop. Hell, she’s got more practical experience than your boy O has. But to be consistent, I’ll give you the “in the whole scheme of things, not much experience” points, if it makes you feel better.
Besides, unlike Obama, she actually has accomplishments and reforms. Also unlike Obama, none of those reforms involves killing infants born alive.
believes in creationism, staunchly pro-life and anti-gay and pro-opening ANWR
You say those like they’re BAD things.
doubt she will win over many hillary voters.
As usual, wrong again. Also, go ask the PUMA ladies how they feel about that. They were gonna vote for McCain BEFORE he picked a woman! I agree that most Hill supporters will vote for Obamaliar, but if even 10-15% of them vote for McCain-Palin (especially in swing states), that could be a factor.
BTW, how’s that for irony? The “party of inclusion” picked a white dude while the “party of discrimination” picked a woman! Shelly O and the Hilldawg talked about women’s progress in politics, and the GOP is the party with a woman on the ticket!
