Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

UPDATED: Zogby and Gallup: McCain up

UPDATES BELOW.

I don’t know how many different ways I can express my “polls with grain of salt” disclaimer, especially when one of them is the once-respected Zogby.  But here you go anyway:

Zogby:  50% – 46%, outside the margin of error of 2.1% and with a large sample (roughly 2,300).

Gallup:  48% – 45%, outside the margin of error of 2% and with a large sample (nearly 2,800).

Zogby’s poll was taken Friday and Saturday (9/5 – 9/6).  Gallup’s was taken entirely after Palin’s speech, but a third of the respondants were polled before McCain’s well-received speech.

Prediction #1: Barring some Dukakis-like screw-up by either candidate henceforth, look for this election to be a carbon copy of the last two elections…close, comes down to a state or two, and maybe not known for certain until the wee hours of the morn.  Only time will tell.

Prediction #2: The tabloidal sharks running the MSM will kick up the smear machine into overdrive in the coming weeks, making what we’ve seen thus far look like a walk in the park.

UPDATE (09/08/2008 – 09:55 AM EST):  USA Today is reporting that McCain is up 10% among likely voters.  Even in my most optimistic scenarios, I don’t see that happening.  At any rate, there it is.

  1. Prediction #1 only matters if the Dukakis-like screw-up comes from the McCain camp. Obama has already gone well past the Dukakis line many times and that’s where Prediction #2 comes into play. The MSM is already in overdrive, but it seems that it is only hurting the defeatocrats now. It is so overt and blatant that people aren’t buying it anymore.

  3. look for this election to be a carbon copy of the last two elections…

I think this one will be worse because we have the issue of race injected into the mix. The Dems are going to pull their usual cheating tricks and then when they LOSE, there will be rioting in the streets of America.

  4. Polls mean everything and nothing at the same time.

I don’t believe they are very accurate, and I work collecting survey data firsthand for one of the most reputable research companies out there. It’s a lot of work converting people who don’t like surveys and polls to answer, and therefore very difficult to get anything close to a random sampling.

They are so damn important in shaping public opinion, though.

  5. Skul,

I’m going with prediction 2, however it causes McCain sympathy/Obama Backlash, and the right and center rallies to the Republican candidate. So much for Obama’s new style of campaigning changing America.
