Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

The federal government’s 100% failure rate

The U.S. Post Service was established in 1775 – they’ve had 234 years to get it right; it is broke, and even though heavily subsidized, it can’t compete with private sector FedEx and UPS services.

Social Security was established in 1935 – they’ve had 74 years to get it right; it is broke.

Fannie Mae was established in 1938 – they’ve had 71 years to get it right; it is broke.

Freddie Mac was established in 1970 – they’ve had 39 years to get it right; it is broke.

Together Fannie and Freddie have now led the entire world into the worst economic collapse in 80 years.

The War on Poverty was started in 1964 – they’ve had 45 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our hard earned money is confiscated each year and transferred to “the poor”; it hasn’t worked.

Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965 – they’ve had 44 years to get it right; they are both broke; and now our government dares to mention them as models for all US health care.

AMTRAK was established in 1970 – they’ve had 39 years to get it right; last year they bailed it out as it continues to run at a loss!

This year, a trillion dollars was committed in the massive political payoff called the Stimulus Bill of 2009; it shows NO sign of working; it’s been used to increase the size of governments across America, and raise government salaries while the rest of us suffer from economic hardships. It has yet to create a single new private sector job. Our national debt projections (approaching $10 trillion) have increased 400% in the last six months.

“Cash for Clunkers” was established in 2009 and went broke in 2009 -  after 80% of the cars purchased turned out to be produced by foreign companies, and dealers nationwide are buried under bureaucratic paperwork demanded by a government that is not yet paying them what was promised.

Last year, the Senate decided to privatize its own government-run restaurant.  After decades of subpar food and annual losses (despite having merely hundreds of customers), the Senate decided that it couldn’t competently operate a restaurant, so it outsourced the restaurant to the private sector.

Since our federal government has a perfect 100% failure rate and a record that proves that each and every “service” shoved down our throats by the imperial federal government turns into disaster, I’ve got a wonderful idea:  How about we trust our government (who can’t even run a restaurant) to run or even set policies for America’s health care system, 1/7th of our economy?

I mean, they’re bound to get one of these things right some time, right?  Law of averages, or something?

  2. Sources? Just saying something is broken or not successful doesn’t necessarily make it true.

  3. Comparing the Post Office to FedEx and UPS is ridiculous. You know full well that neither FedEx or UPS delivers regular mail, and couldn’t do so for what the Post Office charges. The price of sending a letter would skyrocket if it were to be outsourced. I’m not suggesting the Post Office is a model of efficiency, but its unlikely anyone could currently do better.

    Concerning Amtrak, no kidding it runs at a loss. Who’s going to ride a train anywhere in this country? We can’t even get people to carpool. It took $4 a gallon to make people consider hybrid SUV’s. That’s the governments fault?

    As for the War on Poverty, go ahead and try to run this country without some form of wealth redistribution. That’s the breeding ground for revolution and violence, as any politician on either side of the fence in any country will tell you. That’s why those programs continue to exist to this day. If you’re not going to rant about corporate greed, no fair complaining about government give away programs. One necessitates the other.

    I’m not crazy about the government running healthcare. I’ve dealt with government employees enough times to know about their incompetence and red tape. I also don’t believe healthcare is a right. Rather, it is a NEED. And if you have 40 million people (if that number is to be believed) in this country with a need that isn’t being met, something is seriously wrong and needs to be fixed. As we are going to get some sort of government run healthcare out of this no matter what, I think Republican lawmakers would do better to make themselves part of the discussion instead of just opposing the entire plan outright. Enough nonsense about death panels and waiting lines, work on getting something that actually works.

  4. Kathy, you’re just precious.

    There are a plethora of sources out there (as well as our own lying eyes) that show how inept these government-run programs are. Although if it makes you feel better, I did provide a source to the failure of the government-run restaurant.

    Just so I’m not putting words in your mouth, let me hear you say it: Do you honestly believe that all of the government-run enterprises/ventures/programs I mentioned are smashing successes? If so, I’ve got some swampland I’d like you to take a look at. :lol:

  5. Jonathan, you are an embarrassment to my birth name. Let’s dispel your nonsense, shall we?

    Comparing the Post Office to FedEx and UPS is ridiculous. You know full well that neither FedEx or UPS delivers regular mail…

    First of all, I do NOT know that FedEx or UPS couldn’t do regular mail on a competitive level. Neither do you.

    …and couldn’t do so for what the Post Office charges.

    Apparently, the Post Office can’t deliver mail for what the Post Office charges! :lol:

    Who’s going to ride a train anywhere in this country? We can’t even get people to carpool. It took $4 a gallon to make people consider hybrid SUV’s. That’s the governments fault?

    Did you even read what you wrote while that thought was festering in your gourd? Yes, it is the government’s fault that they insist on funding (with confiscated taxpayer money) a source of mass transportation that, by your own admission, no one uses.

    As for the War on Poverty, go ahead and try to run this country without some form of wealth redistribution.

    I’m going to go ahead and ignore that piece of socialist garbage, except to give you this: wealth is something that is earned, not distributed! The government doesn’t give us wealth. We earn it ourselves. It is NOT theirs to give away!

    That’s why those programs continue to exist to this day.

    No, those programs exist today to (a) keep people dependent on government and therefore (b) to buy votes. “Vote for me, or my opponent will make you get off your duff and go get a job!”

    If you’re not going to rant about corporate greed, no fair complaining about government give away programs. One necessitates the other.

    Um…non-sequitir much? You may want to drop your community college Marxism 101 course and enroll in Logic 101 pronto! If you’re lucky, drop-add is still going on at your juco.

    …work on getting something that actually works.

    Proposals have come out that would actually work:

    limit frivolous lawsuits that drive insurance premiums up (won’t happen because the left is beholden to ambulance chasers);

    allow insurance companies to operate across state lines and thus pool resources from multiple states (which would necessarily drop premiums);

    allow people like me who are rarely sick and would like to have something just for emergencies to purchase health savings accounts on a tax credit basis;

    cut through the mountains of red tape that make administering health insurance a bureaucratic nightmare;

    allow health insurance associations, where industries can pool all employees or entrpreneurs together to bring costs-per-premium down; etc.

    Premiums have shot up over the years due to mountains of bureaucratic red tape that cause insurance companies to have to hire people just to keep up with all of it (that’s an extra cost that the companies are incurring, and surely you aren’t stupid enough to think they’re going to eat the cost themselves, right?). Premiums have also shot up because of the tons of frivolous lawsuits (like the kind John Edwards made a fortune off of filing) , which have made medical malpractice insurance premiums skyrocket…and again, you don’t think the doctors and hospitals won’t pass those costs on to consumers, right?

    In other words, government and trial lawyers have given us the state of health insurance that we have today. And your solution to this problem is…more government? No thanks, pal. When your government controls your health care, they control you.

  6. Most excellent replies Crush!
    We all remember earlier in Uh-Obama’s campaign (I’m saying earlier because he still acts as if he’s campaigning) when he told Joe-the-Plumber that he wants to “Redistribute the Wealth”! And he and Mrs. Uh-Obama and Van Jones still believe in that form of of government. They are on record saying so!

  8. Right, Steve. The military has been the only model of success by our government, but even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then! :lol:

  11. While I think we have the absolut best Military and Military Personnel in the world, I think we see our Politicians mismanage those assets and make horrific tactical decisions that thank god, our men and women are still able to overcome.

    One example of poor planning was going through Iraq and leaving hughe weapons stockpiles un-garded.

    The Federal Govt. is NOT the solution to our current economic and health care troubles, THEY ARE THE PROBLEM!

  16. Love the post Crush. I think it is important to realize, that even minus the corruption and incompetence, having the government run anything other than the military will never work. I posted something on my blog that I think directly relates to the points made here. I hope it is alright to post a link to it here. http://bbbillysrants.blogspot.com/2010/02/capitalism-healthcare.html
    Again, love the post and I will be reading more.

  18. I stand with Mr. Crush. The US Post Service could 1) start by delivering mail 3 times a week. 2) Charge more to deliver junk mail. 3) Raise the cost of a stamp more than 2-4 cents at a time that is just plain stupid. If the US Postal Service were privately run, it would be profitable. If an individual had to be responsible to make the agency profitable, it would look for ways to increase revenues and cut expenses. Unlike government, run agency that look for ways to spend their entire budget so they can get more the next year and pay for it with tax dollars. This is plain and simple and if you people cannot see that, you are morons. I have been in business 25 years and if my company cannot afford something, it does not buy it. AND I certainly do not ask the government for money to operate.
