1. The States shouldn’t have to do it. Imagine if the Federal Government followed the supreme law of the land, The Constitution, rather than the whims of the liberal elite.

2. Imagine that, indeed. But rather, now a federal court has ordered AZ to stop protecting her own interests, and leave the NON-enforcement up to the feds. Vote farming…nothing will stop the left – ESPECIALLY the constitution!

   Dismantling of big government sounds like a nice phrase. What does it mean? Does it mean that corporations go out of existence, because there will no longer be any guarantee of limited liability? Does it mean that all health, safety, workers rights, etc., go out the window because they were instituted by public pressures implemented through government, the only component of the governing system that is at least to some extent accountable to the public (corporations are unaccountable, apart from generally weak regulatory apparatus)? Does it mean that the economy should collapse, because basic R&D is typically publicly funded? like what we’re now using, computers and the internet? Should we eliminate roads, schools, public transportation, environmental regulation? Does it mean that we should be ruled by private tyrannies with no accountability to the general public, while all democratic forms are tossed out the window?

   I doubt it. I can’t imagine a business going “Hey, guys, we now have unlimited liability. That sucks. Well, time to close up shop. It was fun while it lasted.” If a business does that, its replacement will be along in no time. Competition: It’s a beautiful thing.

   No, it doesn’t mean that at all. The marketplace of ideas and the free-flowing of news both do a great job at forcing changes. Corporations are NOT unaccountable, since when they screw up, they do so in the public eye. Case in point: BP. The government has done virtually nothing to BP (other than twist a $20 billion promised slush fund out of them), yet because of the bad PR that this corporation has been getting (and deservedly so), their stock is in the tank, Heyward got fired, etc. How about that! I mean, a corporation was held accountable, and the government had two things to do with that accountability: jack and squat.

   Um…Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Basic R&D is NOT publicly funded! One of the reasons the drug companies charge so much isn’t because they wanna get mega-wicked filthy stinkin’ rich. It’s because a large chunk of their revenue goes into R&D. The overwhelming majority of private companies fund their own R&D. And those that don’t, should. Maybe a case can be made with federal funding into weapons R&D, since national defense is a clear federal role. But even that’s stretching it, if the weapons company is a private entity.

   Good grief. With all due respect, Ann, you sound like an indoctrinated Marxist college kid or something. I’m not trying to be insulting, but that’s how you’re coming across.

   Computers have been around for decades, no doubt. But do you honestly, genuinely believe that Apple and Microsoft and scores of other computer and software companies would have never come into existence or thrived if Uncle Sam hadn’t gotten involved? If you honestly believe that, I’ve got some swampland I’d like to show you that I’m selling.

   As for the Internet: No question, it began as a government invention (though not Al Gore’s invention, his claims to the contrary notwithstanding), specifically a defense communication device. However, it took (drum roll) businesses (such as those dreaded evil corporations) to get the Internet thriving the way it is today.

   Look, I get it: you have no faith in the private sector, and you instead have faith in government. However, your ideology is a proven, demonstrable failure. It wasn’t fiscal conservatism that has swamped this country in massive debt and trillion-dollar-plus yearly budget deficits. It was liberal spending and social engineering (and yes, that includes Republicans when they controlled the purse strings) that has brought this country to its fiscal knees. When you confiscate the fruits of labor from producers in order to try and tinker with society, there comes a point when the producers don’t produce as much; when society’s parasites want more and more of what they didn’t earn; when today’s “gimme gimme gimme” generation starts demanding things from its government that is not in government’s delineated roles to provide; etc. They tried that in the Soviet Union and other places that no longer exist. Apparently, people who work hard and earn stuff don’t like to have it pilfered from them and handed to a welfare brood mare in Houston…go figure.

   Nearly every single problem we have in this country today is the result of government intervention in the private sector, and there really is no disputing that. Oh sure, you can try to dispute it, if it sweetens your dreams. But the simple fact remains: with the technology era that we live in, business missteps and misdeeds get amplified (and they should), and people (i.e. the market) will punish the wrongdoers. BP will likely have a hard time recovering, just like Exxon did, just like other companies have tried. Some companies, like Exxon, institute changes that eventually restore faith, and other companies, like Enron and Arthur Andersen, wind up as roadkill on the commerce highway.

   The federal government’s role is clearly stated in the Constitution. States can be as big and bloated (California) or as small and anemic (New Hampshire) as they wish. California, the biggest “big government” state in the union, is teetering on bankruptcy. There’s your utopia, and you’re welcome to it.

7. I have no sympathy for illegal immigrants. However I consider ignorant voters who continue to vote for crooked politicians to be just as harmful to our way of life as foreigners who just occupy space here.
