Obama: My policies have us better off than four years ago.

Well, you know, I think we are better off now than we would have been if I hadn’t taken all the steps that we took. I don’t think the country is stronger yet then it was when the economy was still booming and we didn’t have Wall Street crisis, and we didn’t have the housing bubble burst. But, we’ve made steady progress, we just need to make more.

Boehner spoke to reporters after a conference meeting in which he rallied House Republicans around the message that while the lower chamber is taking action on jobs legislation, the Senate is dithering and the president is campaigning.

Boehner gives Obama more material for future jokes

President Obama recently “cracked wise” about his failed ‘stimulus,’ saying “‘shovel-ready’ was not as ‘shovel-ready’ as we expected.” Of course, it’s not a laughing matter for the 13.7 million Americans looking for work today, and Reuters notes that the president “needs to come up – quickly – with a convincing plan to generate jobs.” Republicans already have such a plan – one focused on promoting the kind of private-sector job growth the ‘stimulus’ promised but failed to deliver. All the details are available now at Jobs.GOP.gov.

Republicans have invited President Obama to help enact our plan, but he appears content with his old one. While the White House insists the president “isn’t waving a victory banner,” there he was in Miami saying he deserves credit for our sluggish economic recovery, according to The Washington Times. ‘Credit’ for 9.1 percent unemployment? If you say so.

As for the joke, perhaps President Obama is on to something about broken promises. Here are similar lines for potential use at future events:

  • “The ‘stimulus’ was not as stimulating as we expected.” This one’s obvious, but timely with the anniversary of Recovery Summer around the corner. Think about it: at this time last year, the White House was readying a victory lap, but our economy has lost hundreds of thousands of jobs since then, and 1.5 million overall since the ‘stimulus’ was enacted.
  • “The ‘Sputnik Moment’ was not as momentous as we expected.” Just weeks after declaring that the United States had reached a ‘Sputnik moment,’ the president released a budget that was widely panned for failing to make the tough choices needed to tackle the job-crushing debt that threatens our ability to compete and secure our children’s future. With the government on track to end the fiscal year $1.6 trillion in the red, the Obama Administration has asked Congress to increase the debt limit without any spending cuts or reforms.
  • ‘‘The ‘Affordable Care Act’ was not as affordable as we expected.’ Families and small businesses continue to suffer from ObamaCare’s maze of mandates, tax hikes, and mandates, which 200 economists and experts have called “major barriers to stronger job growth.”
  • “The ‘Open Government Initiative’ was not as open as we expected.” The White House staff holds regular meetings with lobbyists at Caribou Coffee across the street from the Oval Office so they can avoid recording their meetings on public visitor logs. So much for being ‘the most open and transparent’ administration in history.

UPDATE: GOP leadership, specifically Boehner, full of crap about $38 billion in “cuts”

UPDATES BELOW.

Those of you who have been here for a while know that I am conservative first, and Republican a way, waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy distant second.  Stories like this explain why:

The Congressional Budget Office estimate shows that compared with current spending rates the spending bill due for a House vote Thursday would pare just $352 million from the deficit through Sept. 30. About $8 billion in cuts to domestic programs and foreign aid are offset by nearly equal increases in defense spending.

Speaker Boner is resorting to slaying the messenger, taking to task Red State bloggers he expected would be in his corner on this.  Sorry, Speaker Tearjerker, but it was bad enough when you campaigned on $100 billion in cuts, then pared it down to $61 billion, then down to $38 billion.  And now we see that $38 billion equates to a piddly $352 million in real actual savings?

Come on, Tea Party House Republicans, and vote “No” on the budget deal that Bonehead and his Cowboy Haiku counterpart in the Senate struck behind closed doors!  If you’re not up for the job, Boehner, I’m pretty sure Paul Ryan will fill your shoes quite nicely.

UPDATE (04/15/2011 – 08:50 am EST): If you want to know how bad this budget bill is and how badly Speaker Bonehead botched this, simply ask yourself this: Why did Boehner and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) have to ask House Democrat Whip Steny Hoyer for his help in passing it?  I mean, 59 Republicans voted against the budget, which means that Democrats were needed to pass the bill.  Boehner knew that he was having a revolt within his party over this, and rather than listen to his party’s members trying to talk some sense into him, Boehner opted to ask the other team to help him pass this bill.  How truly shameful!

Reid to Boehner: Don’t try to repeal ObamaCare

Details:

The 112th Congress doesn’t begin until Wednesday, but Senate Democrats are already vowing to block any attempts by the new GOP-led House to repeal the healthcare reform law.

The Senate’s top Democrats, led by Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.), wrote incoming House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Monday warning the new GOP House against advancing legislation that would undo the sweeping healthcare overhaul.

“The incoming House Republican majority that you lead has made the repeal of the federal health care law one of its chief goals. We urge you to consider the unintended consequences that the law’s repeal would have on a number of popular consumer protections that help middle class Americans,” the Democrats said.

In response, Speaker Boehner cordially invited Reid to “self-fornicate” and to “receive a prostate exam from Edward Scissorhands”.

There’s a distinct possibility that I totally fabricated the last line of the above excerpt.

Here’s a great line that ends the article:

But polls have found that other aspects of the bill, including the individual mandate to buy insurance, aren’t popular with the public.

“Maybe it’s not ideal — it’s certainly not communism,” Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) said of the individual mandate, according to the Toledo Blade.

If you have to defend something as “it’s certainly not communism”, then there’s a pretty good chance that it is indeed communism.  Seriously, that’s the best you’ve got, Brown?  “It sucks mightily, but hey, at least it’s not commie legislation, right?”
